A Look at EA's Chief Creative Officer

The San Jose Mercury News ran a profile piece on Electronic Arts' chief creative officer, Bing Gordon. He holds a unique position where he keeps tabs on all the development efforts at EA and offers feedback to the 3,800 developers. Sounds pretty straightforward, but his opinion holds a lot of weight.

Gordon's assessment can make or break a game because he communicates his impressions with the EA's upper echelons. But he isn't capricious in his judgments. He tries to nurture the creators to do their best work. The hours that Gordon puts into playing games reinforces his image as a goofball. But to game developers, his intimate knowledge of their craft earns him respect.
The staff at EA call it being "Binged" when Gordon drops by for a visit. The article also briefly covers the history of EA and its recent negative press.

  • A few "memorable" parts of the article.

``My assignment is to make our product line more innovative,'' he said in his gravelly voice. ``I love inventing new jumping-off points. I love being surprised by world-class imagineers and free associations that can blow my mind.''
-In other words, no one has a fucking clue what I do and neither do I. What I do know is that a sequel ALWAYS sells well. (books flight on company dollar to exotic location)

He is the jester in the court of the king, which in this case is EA Chief Executive Larry Probst, the straight man who runs the company's business. Yet because Gordon has been with the company since its founding 23 years ago, he commands respect from the ranks.
-In other words, I've been here since the beginning. I'm Probst's bitch-boy and because of that there is no WAY they can fire me. Oh yeah! Who wants to get BINGED? (books flight on company dollar to annoy developers)

``Bing once said, `I came into this meeting hoping this was the Queen Mary sailing into the South Harbor of my mind, but it's not,' '' Gibeau recalled. ``It was a total non sequitur, but it got across the point that he wasn't happy.''
-This isn't a sequel WTF, OMG! (books flight to tell Probst to cancel yet another project that isn't a sequel)

``He plays games so much that he has an intuition for what kind of games do well,'' Riccitiello said. ``And he challenges game designers to think bigger. It's a perfect job for him.''
-I'm sooooo glad I thought of The Sims Online. tEh $1mS 0NL1NE r0X0R3Z mY WoRld! (buys alienware laptop AND books flight on company dollar to play SOL while flying to exotic location)

What a fucking joke. I can't believe some of the money spent on games goes to pay for some shit like this. I bet one year of his salary could fund a small developer for a long time. I also like the comment ``He sees things through the eyes of a consumer''. Why don't they put REAL consumers (gamers) in front of their games instead of this tool?

EA sucks. This we know...and no amount of articles festooned with asskissing bullshit will ever change that fact.
