Windows XP 64-bit Launched
by Alec Matias, Apr 25, 2005 8:40am PDTMicrosoft finally launched their 64-bit operating system today with the release of Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. Microsoft highlights their top five reasons to upgrade, such as faster applications, larger memory support, and flexibility with 32-bit programs. MS is also offering a trial version of the OS for 120 days. As it stands, there's a small list of games that take advantage of the 64-bit environment. Chronicles of Riddick and Shadow Ops are two that are available now. Both Ubisoft and Epic Games had said they'd have XP 64-bit versions of Far Cry and UT2K4 available in the first quarter, but neither have been released yet. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will ship optimized for 64-bit gaming. Both ATI and nVidia have 64-bit drivers available, but judging from Internet opinion, performance is a crapshoot.

I've got an X800 Pro, a gig of RAM, a SATA HD and an AMD 64 3400+. I play a lot of games and do absolutely no non-gaming work on there whatsoever. My wife uses it for internet browsing, but that's it. I have Macs for anything else.
Should I upgrade?

Okay, I'm running it. I can print, I have surround sound, I have the latest ATI drivers. Admittedly it hasn't been the smoothest transition. A few things don't work how I'd like them to, and some don't work at all.
But I'm glad I made the upgrade, mainly because I use a few programs that have specific 64bit builds, and they are much, MUCH faster than before. The problems that I've had with programs have been solved over time. The only thing still bugging me in that StyleXP doesn't work, but WindowBlinds has a 64-bit compatible version out with the same theme I used with StyleXP. And the WinRAR context menus don't work, but that's not a big deal.
Nero released a 64bit version, I have a disc image mounter that works with x64 Windows, and so on.
So if you've got any questions, I'm here to test and answer them.

although XPx64 comes with something like 15,000 drivers already and more available through windows update.
But most importantly....there is a free 120 day trial of this. I would be willing to bet that within 120 days most relevant companies will have 64-bit drivers out, so I can pocket that cash for now, this upgrade program goes on through the end of July. So in three months I can deal with this.
I love procrastinating.
But since my next upgrade will be an AMD 64 bit chip I hope they iron out all the small problems including drivers in the next six months.
