Dungeon Siege II Hands-On Preview

by Alec Matias, Apr 21, 2005 10:29am PDT

Early on in August, Gas Powered Games and Microsoft Game Studios will release Dungeon Siege II, the much anticipated sequel to the action-RPG of three years ago. Microsoft sent us a beta build of the game that offered six of the 40-60 hours of the final game. Hoping to improve upon every aspect of the original, the sequel sets out to be a more ambitious RPG and a more involved epic adventure. Here now are my hands-on impressions of Dungeon Siege II.

However, there is one huge change to the combat that may either irk or excite fans of the original game. In the first Dungeon Siege, attacks were pretty straight-forward and automated. Pick an opponent, right click to attack, and away your character went until either yourself or the enemy died. In an effort to make the player feel more interactive, when you want to attack, you must either continuously right click (a la the Diablo series) or hold the right mouse button on your opponent. Although that may not be a big deal to some, it is a dynamic shift in how the game is played.

  • You know, I actually kind of enjoyed the dynamic of Diablo in that if your character was madly hacking at something you were also clicking at the same rate so the battles seemed more hectic.

In Diablo II all you really did was click and hold, although this was usually alleviated because you used so many different skills in that game.

Perhaps I compromise between the two would be the best solution, where you have the option of simply holding the mouse down and having the character attack, but also allowing the player to click, and if the player does manually click for each attack, allow them to attack slightly faster.

With that approach for most enemies you do not need to wear out your mouse clicking 15000 times, but if you are in a boss battle, or overwhelmed, you can get that slight edge by manually clicking for each attack.
