SharkyExtreme has posted their 1999 roundup of shooters with the top 3 games coming in 1. Unreal Tournament, 2. SystemShock2, 3. Quake3. A few people were quick to point out the article was written by Pete 'icemind' Closs of UnrealUniverse not that it should matter. Maarten should be hooking you guys up with the results of his informal 'best of 1999' results here later today.

  • i think the UT bots are probably better at running/controling levels by consistently picking up armor and weapons...but, this consistentcy comes at a price, they basically always run the same path thru the level which makes them very predictable...the q3a bots arent too good at controling level items but their navigation is more dynamic...they can go anywhere at any time and are not tied to any waypoints...when you are in combat with them they strafe like humans and they use all 3 dimensions of the level rather than just strafing back and forth...so, personally i enjoy playing the q3a bots because they seem more human to me, i feel like i have to outsmart them and not just figure out the pattern they are following...

  • I think that SharkyExtreme missed on the #1 FPS being UT with no lows at all.
I would say that they are being a little bit jaded with their comments. What about
the problems with D3D? It came out and didn\'t work on half the video cards
out there. I have a feeling that they are basing this on the fact that Epic has
already released a patch for this. I think that when id releases their patch, we\'ll
see a lot more people jumping UT ship to play Q3A.

    I\'m not saying that I can\'t play both, just that SS2 at #2 and Q3A as #3?
Give me a frigging break! I hadn\'t really even heard of SS2, that\'s how little
    of an impact it made.

I smell a tiny bit of bias in this article. UT isn\'t THAT great. Hell, I still think
it has SO MANY features that it is more like a freakin\' flight simulator than
an FPS. id\'s Q3A is just so clean... THAT is the definition of FPS.
