Shack Game Server Survey

by Steve Gibson, Apr 12, 2005 6:06am PDT

Now that our plans for FileShack are nearing completion (You'll know more in May!) One of the many things we've been looking at recently is game servers for Shackers. Specifically if you guys care to have a slots/rental system setup. If you dont care about this stuff please do drop a vote in the not interested column as I want to see if it's really worth the time and effort or not. Obviously it wouldnt be a major focus here but perhaps another tool made available to you guys.

  • A few notes:
    1) I rent an entire machine from The Planet. It was cheaper to rent a machine and configure whatever I wanted on there however a most gamers probably don't want the hassle of having to admin games AND the Linux OS (or Windows).
    2) One thing that is not on the list of things people want: fast updates as patches are released. Some game servers don't get updated for days.
    3) Another thing gamers want, typically, is some type of control panel that would allow them to configure map rotations, game types, player limits, public/private toggles, server passwords, rconpasswords, etc.
    4) The ability to upload custom maps and have a location for the custom maps to be downloaded (when not in game) is something that people will want to make the server "theirs".
    5) The ability to either have a shell account or a web interface the the server logs is going to be important particularly when griefers are causing problems. The server logs typically contain more information (IP address specifically) which can be handy if you want to ban someone from the game server. Having a web interface to add them to the banlist is helpful, too.
    6) A web interface for their specific machine (not just their specific game server). This is handy to see if latency is high for the machine, what the machine's load is, how many people are connected to the game servers. Using something like cricket here is helpful for both the server owner and the game server lessee.

I've rented and owned game servers; there is a lot of work to keeping people happy on them but they are a great time to be sure (and can be a good investment!). Good luck on getting this candle lit!
