Late Night Consoling

Gotta love the "two games in one!" package that is Phantasy Star Universe. Sadly, I had no interest in the Phantasy Star series until the online title for the Dreamcast and even there I only lasted long enough until I realized it wasn't as open-ended as I was expecting. Still, it's always exciting when SEGA announces a new title for its cherished franchises and I'll follow this one closely. Hopefully, since it is an ambitious project, the proper attention is giving to both modes and we're not stuck with another Star Fox Assault where only half the game is worth playing.

  • Phantasy Star Universe Official

    [ps2]
SEGA of America made it official that their latest RPG, Phantasy Star Universe, will indeed make it to North America. The interesting thing about this game is that it will be both an epic single-player RPG and a MMORPG. It will feature a 40-hour quest with a "character-intensive storyline and plenty of cutscenes" along with a separate online mode, where you create a new character to explore three different worlds. PSU is planned for release in February of 2006 for both the PS2 and PC.
  • More Viewtiful Joes!

    [gcn] [ds] [psp]
The other night we learned Viewtiful Joe would be making an appearance on the PSP. Well, he's also hitting the GameCube and Nintendo DS. The DS title, Scratch! Viewtiful Joe, is a side-scroller that has user drawing lines to progress through the game. The GCN and PSP game will be the same; a fighter featuring characters from the videogames and the anime series. More info is expected at E3.
  • Sony Reveals PSP Sales Numbers

    [psp]
Sony sent out a press release stating that first week sales of the PSP generated $150 million. It also claimed that in the first two days, 500,000 PSPs were sold. However, Sony did not state the final number of units sold in the first week, leaving us game journalists to divide $150 million by $250 to come up with 600,000 units sold. While not necessarily deceit, it does indicate that Sony is not exactly pleased with the numbers behind the first week.
  • Crash Tag Team Racing Announced

    [ps2] [xbox] [gcn] [ds]
Crash and the gang are again hitting the track in a new racing title for the PS2, Xbox, GCN, and DS in Crash Tag Team Racing. New features include the ability to conjoin two karts together to form a super vehicle that sports a turret gun. There's also the ability to get out of the vehicle and run around on foot, but the press release did not describe how that would work gameplay-wise. On the consoles, it can support up to eight players via system-link and four players on the NDS.
  • Xbox 360 Partial Publisher List

    [xbox]
Those sneaky devils over at GameGossip noticed a published list of partial publishers for the next-gen Xbox over on the Taiwan site. There are no real surprises in the list as all of them are past Xbox devs, so nothing to get too excited over, but still handy to look at.
  • Microsoft's New "I Love Bees"

    [xbox]
Had fun trying to figure out how bees coincided with the impending release of Halo 2? Well, you get it to do it all over again, this time with ants, as Microsoft has a new viral marketing campaign underway to promote the next-gen Xbox. Using the site Ourcolony.net, gamers can catch a glimpse of the design of the Xbox 360, as it's rumored to be called. GameSpot found further proof that it's a Microsoft ploy as during the Game Developer's Conference, there's a picture of J Allard wearing a shirt with the same logo as on the site.
  • Video Games Live in Concert

If music from the Final Fantasy series isn't your style, there's another concert in town that picks and chooses classic themes from a myriad of titles. Called Video Games Live, this live performance will take place in Hollywood, CA on July 6. It'll feature music from Halo, Metal Gear Solid, and Sonic The Hedgehog, among others.
