      DO IT, DOUG!!!

Seriously, tripods let you take pictures of still things in low light without needing a flash. Stable surfaces you can lean against, prop your camera on, or place your camera on are a good alternative, but your positioning is limited. Even a cheap gooseneck-leg tripod will help; I have one for my AE-1, but I haven't used it much because it's short and collapses under the camera's weight most of the time.

If this is for that art shooting, I use an old piece of 1"x2", sometimes a broomstick to steady my Fuji digicam, and the "shoot on the exhale" sniper trick, and always take like 6 photos and pick the one that cought the best focus.

Dont buy one just to take photos for your brother!
