Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Mar 29, 2005 5:21pm PSTNice to be home again. Way too much stuff to do but it's nice to be home!
- Music on the web may continue to be hot? - Dont pay your taxes, nobody else does! - Tech in new cars - You dont sleep enough - MS ID system - RFID getting new super happy friendly nameLastly, I finally caved in and signed up for Netflix. I like movies... I actually looked at Blockbuster's service first since I have a store nearby but their website organization just made me cry. You know?
Weekend PC digital deals: strategy-o-rama

Minecraft for Xbox 360 dev working on 'Adventure' update
Demon's Souls servers extended again
Resident Evil: Chronicles HD Collection coming in June
I've resigned myself to never advancing at the current job. It's a really small company and the only people above me are the owners. I know I could get paid more elsewhere (I only make $46,400CDN/yr right now), but the work is interesting, I like my coworkers and I work from home. The chance of a raise is slim to none as well, especially with the layoff.
I know the layoff will be over eventually, so there isn't much risk to me right now, but I've always wanted to work in the game industry. I really do just like making games (hence, working on zdoomgl in my spare time for almost 3 years now).
What are your guys thoughts?

Mace Windu can force "choke"! Sort of, he tries to crush Grievous' lungs. Much more badass than going for the throat. Now if only he didn't go out like a punk :D

im editing home movies for my mom.. basically hours and hours of .. home movies.
anyhow, we had an 8mm->vhs (these are ollld) transfer done years ago, and the guy who did it stuck a bunch of horrible elevator music on it.
so im replacing the 'soundtrack'.. i need suggestions for music tho
so im looking for:
- instrumental
- preferably long (anything over 10 min would be awesome, music changes suck and the longer the track is, the fewer tracks ill need)
- upbeat.. im not looking to make my family suicidal when they watch this
- no techno shit. so when i say instrumental, i dont mean 'not lyrical', i mean INSTRUMENTS. violins, guitars, shit like that. it doesnt have to SUCK, but i dont want like autechre or something.
in case it helps, so far two tracks ive used are godspeed you black emperor - storm, and mogwai - christmas song.. (my mom actually likes the mogwai!) .. so something along the same lines as those two songs would be cool..
no im not asking for mp3s, just suggestions for either bands to check out or specific tracks..
thx!

C&C1 Mod
http://tftw.cnc-source.com/
Review of it here: http://tftw.cnc-source.com/
Unfortunatley, the first release is still buggy, but playable. It includes the music from the original, which is cool.
RA1 Mod (still in production)

The screenshots look promising, as well as this awesome video they made

i got a full 8 hours. came home at 11 and crashed into bed. skipped evening run (grr). i keep telling myself it is good to have a rest day, especially since i broke my running record the past two days and only got 6 hours a night. but i can't help but feel a little guilty.
looks like it's going to keep raining today. i'll run regardless.

The Adventured of Gordon Freeman, and how I broke Half Life 2.
Ok so I am messing around with Half Life 2 tonight and I had come across a couple strange things. It was really strange I tell you. I cannot explain it. Second time through and this is odd, strange even.
Check out the strangeness (warning !SPOILERS!) in reply.

My girlfriend is going away for almost 6 months for an overseas outreach program and I want to send her away with the thing loves more than other stuff such as cheesy filled hotdogs, music. I am in college and money is an issue so I need to see if I can find a super cheap mp3 player that holds 8-20 gigs. It doesn't need fancyness or white earbuds - just big. Ebay is flooded with Ipod but is there anything cheaper? She is no audiophile if that helps.

To someone who's relatively new to RPG games (I'm about to beat Golden Sun 2 for the GBA)... would you recommend Final Fantasy 8 or 9 to start with?
I've heard they're both excellent.

this is bullshit. the cop was doing his job. Why should a doctor get to speed. What if an IT guy was on his way to save a network from a multi-million dollar infestation that could cause tremedous damage, would he get to speed? hell no.

I ask because the PSP I purchased a couple of days ago has one "stuck" pixel about a quarter inch from the bottom of the screen that constantly stays red. It's not noticable at all really unless the screen is black and then it sticks out like a sore thumb.
I bought the unit from Best Buy and purchased the additional "product replacement plan" so I COULD take it back and try my luck on another one, but what if I get one that is worse or something? Anyone exchange one at Best Buy? How did that go?

God, this board was popular for a long time, wasn't it? Didn't it and a simple revision get best-of awards two years in a row? Thats pretty crazy for a motherboard. In family and personal systems, I think I have 5-6 of them around still. Anyways, in all that time I nevered used the SATA in Server 2003. In fact, I never used SATA period. Now, I have used drives on extra "RAID" chips, but normally a single drive non-raided can still be accessed.
For whatever reason, I can't get the SATA drive to show up in server 2003 :(

I have this program that uses a lot of international characters. Korean, farsi, japanese, basically the whole Unicode spectra. Before starting it I would like to make sure the correct font is used by Windows (otherwise it will fuck up the titlebar of the window and all dialog windows).
Is there an easy way of doing this? A registry hack maybe? Or is there a program I can run? I'm running Win2k btw.
Anyone? Bueller?

Take all your favorites and throw them in a folder called Old Favorites or whatever. Now grab the top 20% of links that you use and put them back into your main Favorites. This would mean that if you have 100 Favorites there should now only be 20. I then went through those and numbered them based on which sites I go to the most...so now the Shack is listed as "1 - Shacknews". Now it shows up at the top of my list.
I did this and it has made my browsing so much simpler.

So, does Rogaine work? Buzzing my hair off today, I realized that my scalp is showing a lot more than it did when I was 18. I'd like to prolong the baldness gene from rearing it's ugly head as long as possible. 30 would be nice (22 now).
Anyone use Rogaine or any other similar project and kept their hair a little bit longer?

What are the basic skills required to be decent at an RTS in multiplayer? :/ Is it mainly resource allocation, picking the right rock-paper-scissors combo, being adaptable, or what?

Me and my dad have been experimenting with making his computer into a bit of a recording station, so we can rip television shows from our HDTV for later viewing.
Anyway, we recorded this one show, but our audio is out of sync. Not when it's played on the computer, only when it's played through the DVD player. What gives!? :(

SHACK WEEKLY UPDATE errm... UPDATE
need your help. here is the +inf from this morning for you sane people who were sleeping: http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=9797413
the reason i did the plugin is i can't be at the shack 24x7, monitoring for threads to archive, and i figured it would be cooler if it was a community-driven kind of thing. so if you think this is a good idea, please either install the firefox extension and user script (at the link above), or if you're using IE (wtf!), bookmark http://www.redhavana.net/shackweekly/flag.php which will allow you to manually flag a thread.
i've tried to protect it from spamming by logging ips with the jazz id of the flagged post, so if it's already been flagged by your ip, it will do nothing.
every week, i'll go through and filter, categorize and process the flagged posts. thanks for anyone who participates, with your help this can turn into a very valuable shack thread archive. :)

songs that stuck out for me:
Pablo Picasso
Son's Gonna Rise
Fame
it's got kind of a mellow, hip-hoppy, bluesy, country-almost sort of vibe. well put together album.
