Next-Gen UT Details
by Maarten Goldstein, Mar 27, 2005 6:50pm PSTBeyond Unreal has a news post about the next generation Unreal Tournament game, offering details found in the May issue of Computer Gaming World. The next UT will be powered by the Unreal Engine 3 (and thus we won't see it this year), features voice controlled AI, includes a global ratings system and features a new game mode in Conquest. Here's the skinny on that
* Features eight teams, each with unique armor. * Conquest maps are "potentially as large as three onslaught maps with assault-like objectives and even a form of limited resource management planned" * "there may be the option to treat a conquest match like a long term war, so you can play, take a break, and then go back and play more later" * "you can use your stats to find similarly abled opponents" * "conquest will take advantage of the UE3 engines ability to seamlessly stream maps by putting you in a battlefield the size of several maps stitched together"More here.

I'm sure this will be awesome, just judging by how great UT2k4 was, and how creative the mods created for it were. The only downside was the lack of players for the mods.

Clearly Enemy Territory is having big effects throughout the gaming industry. BF2 and now UT200X are the two big names pulling pieces from ET's success.
I still cry at night thinking about how the ET team (SplashDamage) was pulled from finishing the project to work on Doom3 multiplayer. WHY OH WHY. We can only hope the Splash Damage's current project is ET2...plz

Still the linked multiplayer map streaming sounds cool, hope it works, hope it's done right. Not that it matters because Epic is rich and is only getting richer thanks to XBOX2 and UE3. ;)

I'd actually love to see them do a space combat mode, where you've got capital ships, shuttles, fighters, etc...and you can dock onto a capital ship or corvette with your shuttles and transports (or breacher pods or whatever) and try to take the ship for your team and use it...or you could disable it or destroy it. With portals it wouldn't be too hard to do this really.

Wow. I just don't give a shit about this at /all/. Epic's unveiled a beautiful new engine full of promise in most conceivable areas, and now it's going to be most immediately and deeply associated with another iteration of a game concept that reached maturity with user mods for the first Unreal Tournament and enjoyed its culmination in UT2004. So many fascinating possibilities exist here, and there's so much that hasn't even been tried in gaming... to know that I'll see a genuinely talented development powerhouse spending another few years beating a tired horse is numbing.
Fuck it. They were cooler when they still called themselves Epic *Mega*Games.

Awesome.
IMO Onslaught and this newfangled Conquest should be a seperate game. I've never really cared for Onslaught.
Personally I think they should just make UT3 a Battlefield 2505 type game. I guess that's what Onslaught is though.
As long as it has some really good tourney and DM maps I'll be happy.
More.
