Late Night Consoling
by Alec Matias, Mar 25, 2005 8:00pm PSTI'm glad to see the end of this week; I am just 100% pooped. Who thought playing videogames could be this tiring? Luckily, the PSP launch lineup largely consists of games that are decent to above average, so I haven't been forcing myself through many stinkers, which would cause a deep depression. I took a nap after my second PSP article went up today and I realized I totally forgot to talk about Ridge Racer! To surmise, it's good stuff, definitely the racing game to get. Sadly, it may be the toughest PSP game to get; here in Orlando, unless you pre-ordered, you're S.O.L. and Steve was telling me that he wasn't finding any where he lives. He did pick up Lumines, so that should keep him busy, and if it doesn't, it would further prove he has zero taste for quality entertainment.
- Microsoft Game Studios officially revealed the Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack, a collection of nine new multiplayer maps to be released on June 28. There's two way to acquire them: purchase a hard copy at retail for $19.99 and get two special videos with the disc or download them over time on Xbox Live for a final cost of $17.98. Two will be made available for free, courtesy of Mountain Dew, sometime in late April. However, if you hold out until the end of summer, all maps will be available for free. A look at the new maps and Q&A can be found at Bungie's site.

[xbox] - The latest issue of Game Informer has the first details on Oddworld Inhabitant's next game. In an absolutely shocking move, the next game will take place in the Oddworld universe, this time with a new lead: Fangus. This game will keep the same style of gameplay found in Stranger's Wrath and the story revolves around Fangus' attempt at defending his home from invading forces, all while fighting back symptoms of rabies. According to developers, it's possible that the game will land a Mature rating when it's released sometime next year. Electronic Arts will not publish the title.

[xbox] - Many gamers were up in arms over the rumored fact that Sony would not repair PSPs with dead pixels. The rumor started from a supposed e-mail from a Canadian game store, but GameSpot contacted Sony directly and received the whole story. "According to a technical support associate contacted by GameSpot, PSP owners who encounter a persistent and aggravating dead-pixel issue should contact SCEA's customer service line (1-800-345-7669) for instructions on how to exchange their unit after a week or two of using the unit. 'We will work with you,' he assured."

"We maintained Shadow as a mysterious character and now fans can control his destiny..." It'll release in the winter for all three home consoles.

Xbox trouble question.
I just got this Xbox. It was freezing on the last level of Halo. At check points or probably any other time it needs the HD it would hitch or outright freeze. I heard slight clicking noises but they sounded like normal drive things, not death.
I've been playing all day, without giving the xbox a break. After powering down the system and firing it back up, I'm having no problems at all.
Has this been known to happen? Does the Xbox or Halo cache certain things and eventually freak out and get confused if you play for 12+ hours?
This is a microsoft-packaged refurb system. I'd like to think they check it out.

I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.
Any chances the percentage of PSPs with dead pixels will drop with time and higher production quality?
Deadpixels are a problem with LCDs but you don't hear people with desktop or laptop LCDs reporting dead pixels. Not to the ratio of the PSP (see that previous FP/ER how many dead pixels on your PSP thread -- the amount of dead pixels is shocking). I've only seen dead pixels on a laptop once, a high end IBM about six years ago which was exchanged three or four times for the same reason -- dead pixels.
Now if that was a common problem with IBM laptops, I doubt they'd be as popular as they are now. I have no idea how LCD screens are manufactured, so I ask, is there a specific challenge in making dead pixel-free displays of a smaller size?

I'm worried after watching these, they better clean that shit up. If they fuck up this game I am going to be really pissed!
