Late Night Consoling
by Alec Matias, Mar 24, 2005 8:00pm PSTA tiny update with big news. It is pretty mind-boggling for Namco to decide to go the console-exclusive route with Soul Calibur III, especially with a console that didn't have the most copies sold for its previous fighter. Of course, the PS2 is the largest market and would make most sense, it's still odd decision to alienate all those GameCube and Xbox owners who supported the second SC. Plus, the announced details don't seem to stand out enough to warrant a full-blown sequel; three characters and a create-a-fighter mode? Sounds like there should be way more than that with online play being a must.
- Namco Hometek announced the latest entry into the Soul Calibur series and they confirmed the rumors: Soul Calibur III will be a PlayStation 2 exclusive. Namco also confirmed that three new characters will be introduced, for a total of 25 overall, and a create-a-player mode will be included. It's set for release later this year. Check out the first trailer for the game at FileShack.

soul calibur 1 was known not only for it's incredible gameplay, but also for the incredible graphics, visuals, and animation. it set the standard for graphics on the dreamcast, and even today looks stunning compared to many of the current games available.
even now, soul calibur 1 on dreamcast looks a hell of a lot better than soul calibur 2 on ps2. no question.
the ps2 is a technically inferior system. there is no debating that, and soon to be replaced with the ps3. i just don't understand this mess. i know it comes down to money but seriously, this is a stupid decision by namco.
i am a HUGE soul calibur fan, i know 1 and 2 inside and out. but there is no way i will play sou calibur 3 if it is only available on the ps2. no way.

The "make your own PSP" thing sounds pretty cool.
Is this the start of possibly seeing emulated games, such as, NES/SNES/SEGA, etc? Hell even MAME arcade games could be umulated on it.
And how would the DS/GBA fare knowing you can get free emulated classics they charge for on the PSP? If this does happen that is.
I smell a grey area of lawsuits (even thought they dont mess with the PC market, go figure).
GC - 778,821
PS2 - 723,377
Xbox - 520,113
And the GC version sold about 1.5 Million copies worldwide.
Why make this an exclusive? Well if something good comes of this it's an interesting experiment seeing how many copies a exclusive PS2 SC will sell compared to one where people could pick their favorite characters since alot of people own a PS2 and a XBOX/GC.

Guess Sony must have bankrolled the hell out of them for this. It's really a good move on their part.
I am not sure what they could do with Big N, maybe something with revolution (or whatever it will be)
