Late Night Consoling
by Alec Matias, Mar 22, 2005 8:00pm PSTThe first U.S. review of Metal Gear Acid was posted tonight, care of IGN, and they gave it a rather disappointing 6.5 out of 10. Too much thinking and not enough engaging action appears to be the crux of the game. The score is surprising, considering the positive foreign press around the game. Let's hope we see some more opinions on that game in the near future. On a similar note, who's attending a midnight sales launch for the PSP? I guess I triggered Steve's interest in the device earlier today and he's bummed out he won't be able to hit up a store at midnight tomorrow. There's always Wal-Mart!
- Earlier in the day, EBgames put up a listing for the Halo 2 Expansion Pack, a $19.99 add-on for the Xbox's most popular game. The description read, "The Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack is a collection of nine multiplayer maps, as well as non-playable video content (a cinematic and a mini-documentary). Delivered on a standard Xbox DVD disc, the multiplayer content can be used by gamers on Xbox Live as well as those who play multiplayer via System Link or via Split-screen (on one Xbox)." EBgames listed its release as May 25. Bungie is expected to make an official announcement on Friday.

[xbox] - A new rumor has hit the web claiming that the next Soul Calibur will be exclusive to the PlayStation 2. The source is apparently GamePro magazine, where they have a mini-preview that basically states just that. A new feature to the series will be a create-a-character mode, where you can select sex, weapon, and even occupation. The article slated it for a fall release.

[ps2] - The multi-console hit, Sonic Heroes, is now considered a platinum title, a greatest hit, and a fine choice amongst players. The game will be repackaged and sold at $19.99 for the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. "The tremendous retail success of Sonic Heroes across all platforms makes it clear that everyone's favorite hedgehog is still at the top of his game," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Entertainment Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "And this value-priced re-issue is just the beginning; Sonic has a handful of other big surprises in store for gamers throughout 2005."

Would be interesting to see how the sales was divided among platforms, obviously someone must think they can make more money/save money with an exclusive deal?

$20 for a map pack on Xbox isn't going to get any cheaper. Those Xbox discs cost a lot just to get them on store shelves (QA, mastering, shipping, etc), and the store has to make money on them, too.
The complaint should not be the $20- its just not possible to be cheaper and be on store shelves while still making money.
A valid complaint would be about the lack of features or number of maps, I would say. They could have at least thrown in a few new weapons, powerups, or game modes. Bungie and MS made some pretty fat cash with Halo and Halo 2. Seems like they could have slapped a bit more content on that, if it is true that it only has 9 maps.
The main reason Unreal can release so much stuff for free is because most of it is made by player community...so it doesn't cost anything to them.

As far as Acid I almost bought it today when buying Ridge Racer but decided to put it off cause I wasn't sure. So now I guess I am glad I did, now I just have to get another game. I want Wipeout but not 2 racing games at the same time so I might go for Lumines.
Anyway good luck tommorrow/Thursday.

"This being a card/board/puzzle game, there are elements of realism that this game can almost be excused for leaving behind. Dividing the stages up into blocks of a game board works well enough, but the detailed graphics and environmental effects suggest a sense of animated reality, while the characters remain stiff and unnervingly patient, performing actions such as waiting without reacting on a turn to shoot back at someone that has just shot them in the face. It makes for an odd juxtaposition of reality and phoniness. You'll see enemies take entire clips in the back and head because of the special body armor they have equipped that gives them protection. They'll fall, get right back up, and wait until their turn to shoot back. Even better, they may "faint" after getting torn apart with bullets and then get little dizzy stars that encircle their head. There are moments where I just felt robbed for my efforts -- defeated by one or two missed hit points. There are points in the game where your goose gets cooked, for sure, but the heat of battle stays tepid."
that sounds like a classic turn based strategy game to me. i've been keen on this since day 1 (and i hate the MGS games with a passion), and the only reason i didn't pre order it was because i wasn't sure if it was going to be any good in its own right, i knew what type of game it was going to be.
i'm just pissed that Climax got the PSP ATV game and not Rainbow Studios :( my PSP will arrive with Ridge Racer and Wipeout, and MGA, THUG2, and a couple of other games are going to be hard to resist.

Wow has anyone got to play it yet. I work at best buy and the sony rep was in there and was showing it of the screen is HUGE and it looks soo sweet.. I asked him about the battery and he said everyone asks about that and its 4 - 7 hrs and he went on to say that 4 - 7 hrs is a good time as playing it for 4 hrs straight u got some kinda problem.. now the release of the games at launch is kinda light but oh well.. Itll get better, he also mentioned that u can change the video options to make the battery last longer and the devlopers can also make the games to have the batter last longer... so its up to them for the batter life.. There wasn't hardly any loading time at all it was Wipeout Pure that was being played... Also mentioned that no returns on the unit if it has been tampered with in anyway so im guessing there are moding tools out there for the psp already just not leaked yet..

The reviewer apparently expected a traditional Metal Gear Solid game on the PSP. Any person with half a brain would have known that this game was not designed to be that, and instead was something different. Thus, they were disappointed.
As I said earlier today, the guy who wrote this review is the same one who made references to the Japanese Vampire Chronicles game in his Darkstalkers PSP review. Only a handful of people know about that game, most of who are Japanese. So why on earth mention it in a North American review? How is that a point of reference?
Its like IGN specifically chose someone who won't like the game to write the review. Who on earth makes decisions like this? Seriously, expectations are everything when it comes to video games, and just from reading the previews on IGN's own website you can discover that what this viewer expected is not what the game provided.
