Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Mar 11, 2005 6:00pm PSTWell I'm pretty sure I regret not going to GDC now... it seems that show sure has skewed away a lot from what it was originally. Could have gotten to see a lot of nifty stuff. Bah!
- Online spending still growing - Do you speak tech? - Nerds dig Austin - McDonalds to outsource drive-throughs? - Better fitness means better hump hump - Broadband and TVLastly, your fun stat for the day.. I did a few hour profile of browser usage around these parts and FireFox has broken past 30%. IE is still of course like 69% though.
Daily Filter: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13: The Masters, Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion
Dear Esther Mac port confirmed
Killing Floor hits a million sales, discounted on Steam
Jam Live Music Arcade announced for PS3, Xbox 360
Metal Gear Online to quietly die this summer
69% + 30% = 109%. So if FF has 30%, IE must have 59%.

Transcript from the last panel of the day at GDC- IGDA Session: Burning Down The House - Game Developers Rant
Warren Spector, Chris Hecker, Greg Costikyan etc. going OFF on the state of the industry.
Warren Spector:
I tried to bail on this panel. But I have to say something so I want to say how this business is hopelessly broken. Haha. We’re doing pretty much everything wrong. This is at the root of much of what you’re gonna hear today. Games cost too much. They take too long to make. The whole concept of word of mouth, remember that? Holy cow it was nice.

Playing HL2 in 1920 × 1200 made me a little dizzy. If you're in the market for a new monitor and have ~900 bucks to spend, you'd be crazy to pass this up.

We started playing 5 hours ago, and its still fun enough, even though I'm a relative noob at Warcraft (I bought the game a couple years back, but didnt play it much).
But yea. We've been playing for five hours, and even though he's kicking my ass, we've been playing 3 games and he's whooped my ass. Its still fun.
A++ Would recommend again lolgglollerskatebye.

Anyway, this is the first car I've ever purchased myself. The vehicles I had as a teenager and during university were the leftovers from my parents that I had to insure and put gas in. My company provided me one for the last three years, so I didn't need to buy anything. Suffice it to say, I'm very happy. Oh, and it's a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. :)

it's a 3rd generation ipod, with an appropriate dock.
I had the 10gb and it charged fine, then I upgraded to the 15gb through the warranty, and I can't remember it ever working since (that was like 8 or 9 months ago).
It will connect to the computer fine, but it'll just run the battery down when it sits in the dock. If I connect the cable straight to the ipod, it'll charge just fine though :(

HOSTAGE is Bruce Willis's best movie since the Die Hard series. My gf and I went to see this last night to the late showing. By the time the movie was over, we were both worn out, its so dramatic and suspensfull that my leg muscles were hurting for about an hour after it was over.
You really get to know the people that are "taken as hostages" and the way the "bad guys" stumble into taking them is almost to real. These kids dont plan on doing this, they just want to steal the guys car, and it ends up in some of the coolest action, gun play, and burning building scene I have seen in a long time in a movie.
9.5/10 GG Bruce!

Me: I love to go fishing. Being out in the open on the water, sun on my skin, with my hand on the reel waiting for the bite and the excitement of fighting the fish and finding out what I cought, etc is just awesome.
Last night my computer crashed. Tried booting it up and it was no bueno. Got a new hard drive today (80GB Seagate Barracuda) and got XP and all installed on it. Hooked up my old hard drive (Quantum Fireball 40GB) so it could read as a second disk drive, but it says its not formatted would I like to format it now....WTF! It has alot of personal information on it I need to recover, and I know its not a raw drive because the error I got when I booted it up alone was "Could Not Read Windows yada yada," basically meaning corrupted boot sector, which has happened before and I was able to recover all the data other than Windows. So whats going on here and what can I do? I beg for help seriously.

Anyone buy new games and fall behind on even playing them? I think I've purchased four new games in the past month and have yet to play three of them. Just amazing how as you get older you have less time to do the things you like.
Namely Mercinares, Fight Night Round 2, Gran Turismo 4 and MLB 2006.

I have had a mountain bike for quiet awhile. Its nothing special, its a mongoose xr200: disk brakes, aluminium frame, full suspension, 21 speed, alloy rims. For one thing, i need a bike rack to fit the back of my Mustang (has a spoiler) and I think I have found one, Saris Bones 2 bike carrier. Anyway, does anyone here mountain bike at all? What are some good workouts and stuff to do to get me ready for more advanced trails? Also, as far as helmets go....have you ever worn this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=58079&item=7140795365&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
I have a bell helmet right now and i hate it because its xbox HUGE on my head.

Seriously guys, Big Brother is just around the corner... either that, or Skynet RC2 is getting ready to go live.
Dunno if this has been posted already, but it's a pretty big deal, so I figured it could be posted again...

Yes, I'm unknowledgable, but I think I'm making some progress. Alright, so I'm back in Linux trying to get mp3 support going for Fedora Core. I'm trying to follow the instructions to install the GSTreamer Plugins from this page: http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/download/fedora.html
Everything's good except when I enter this command:
I get this error:
gpg: failed to create temporary file `/root/.gnupg/.#lk0xf7005998.x1-6-00-50-ba-e5-2d-76.5597': No such file or directory
gpg: keyblock resource `/root/.gnupg/secring.gpg': general error
gpg: failed to create temporary file `/root/.gnupg/.#lk0xf7005ca8.x1-6-00-50-ba-e5-2d-76.5597': No such file or directory
gpg: keyblock resource `/root/.gnupg/pubring.gpg': general error
I don't know what the command is really doing let alone why it's not working. Any suggestions?

Someone on my course at college spotted me doodling and asked me to make a logo for their company. Needing the money I said yes to the offer.
Now I've nearly finished it but donno how to go about the business side of things.
How much should I charge?
Should I create an invoice or something?

I'm desperately trying to find an alternative here, but it's pretty tough considering it's 6 pm and on a Saturday no less. I got through this guy that works for Summit Ski Shuttle who was pretty cool (especially considering I was calling him when he was at his son's hockey game and not working), but he says it's such short notice it's probably unlikely that they'll find something. He said to wait about 30 minutes to call me back.
I think that I could find a way back on Monday if I manage to get there tomorrow, but right now things are pretty hazy. I'm not sure I want to get stuck in Vermont either.
Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?
