Nintendo's Wireless Revolution
by Alec Matias, Mar 10, 2005 12:54pm PSTNintendo President Satoru Iwata gave his keynote address at the Game Developer's Conference and the majority of his speech focused on wireless connectivity and their next-gen console, currently codenamed Revolution. Iwata confirmed that IBM is working on the processor, codenamed "Broadway," while ATi is handling the graphics chip, codenamed "Hollywood." Two big surprises came out of the presentation. First, Revolution will be backwards compatible with the GameCube. Second, Revolution will come standard with wi-fi capabilities. Also, Nintendo will roll out this year a free Wi-Fi connection service for the Nintendo DS. Hot spots will be put up around the country in places such as coffee shops and hotels. An Animal Crossing game is in development to take advantage of this new network.
"This is Nintendo's plan: make our existing game world better," Iwata said. "For us, this is a passion. This is a mission of adventure."The event included a new trailer for The Legend of Zelda title in development for the GameCube. You can download the trailer here from FileShack.

PS3/XBOX3 = desktop PC
PSP/GBA/NDS = PDA
Revolution = Laptop
So maybe a portable GameCube with 3x Mhz and 3x RAM of current gamecube .

But it just doesn't sound that revolutionary, I was expecting something more.
It looks to me that Nintendo will be taking 3rd place again in the next generation of consoles.

I've been the one going on and on about Nintendo offering quality FREE online capability putting a dent in the competition. Now that it looks like it's on the horizon, I'll just reiterate: no wonder Microsoft is trying to cram in as many Live features for the next Xbox- they're going to have to justify those (higher) monthly fees now.

Nintendo DS: Iwata announced that the Wi-Fi protocol for Nintendo DS will provide users with a link to other players across the country or around the world. Once the service begins later this year, Nintendo DS users will be able to connect to the service wirelessly at Wi-Fi hot spots, whether they’re at home, in a hotel or at a coffee shop. As one of several Wi-Fi games, Nintendo’s in-house development team is creating a new Animal Crossing game for global Wi-Fi play.

I hope this means in addition to allowing customers to make their own hotspots using a wifi router...
