First Post!

Other things yesterday prevented me from playing Mercenaries for very long, but I have to say that things do blow up very nicely in the game. So there you have it, my 5 minute impressions: stuff blows up. Had some requests recently for a few additions to our news feed, you can find an updated XML here. It now includes part of the news item, and the exact date/time. Also on FileShack

  • At work, various projects over the years have spawned different software modules that were being reused, so that new products can avoid reinventing the wheel by just taking existing components and gluing them together. This is especially helpful since the company focuses in a few specialized fields.

So when I joined the team and they set me loose on my first couple of assignments, I had to figure out which module did what. So the first person I went to was my "mentor," a guy who went to PSU too and joined the company a couple years ago. Well he had never used it. So then I went to my supervisor. He didn't know the details, even though the code I was working on was written by him and it used the module in question. So I go across the hall to the "guy you can go to when you have ANY question." and he didn't know. So finally I pick through the sparse documentation and find out who was on the team that wrote the module itself and ask them, and finally the manager of the team gets back to me and tells me how it works. Cool.

The thing is this has happened with like five components already, and each time it has gone mentor-strike! supervisor-strike! guy across hall-strike! original team leader-HOME RUN! I can only hope that soon there is another new guy in the hallway so that he can work his way down the offices and I'll be the guy to answer the questions and that this will help my value to the company. Because I never seem to get credit for nailing down all this stuff everyone else cut 'n' pastes... :(
