Encyclopedias aspire to be infallible. But Wikipedia requires that the perfect never be the enemy of the good. Citizen editors don't need to make an entry flawless. They just need to make it better. As a result, even many Wikipedians believe the site is not as good as traditional encyclopedias. "On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give Wikipedia a 7.8 in reliability," Kvaran told me in New Mexico. "I'd give Britannica an 8.8." But how much does that matter? Britannica has been around since before the American Revolution; Wikipedia just celebrated its fifth birthday. More important, Britannica costs $70 a year; Wikipedia is free. The better criterion on which to measure Wikipedia is whether this very young, pretty good, ever improving, totally free site serves a need - just as the way to measure Britannica is whether the additional surety that comes from its production model is worth the cost.
There's another equally important difference between the two offerings. The One Best Way approach creates something finished. The One for All model creates something alive. When the Indian Ocean tsunami erupted late last year, Wikipedians produced several entries on the topic within hours. By contrast, World Book, whose CD-ROM allows owners to download regular updates, hadn't updated its tsunami or Indian Ocean entries a full month after the devastation occurred. That's the likely fate of Wikipedia's proposed stable, or snapshot, version. Fixing its contents in a book or on a CD or DVD is tantamount to embalming a living thing. The body may look great, but it's no longer breathing.

FREE, FUN GAME! DOWNLOAD AND PLAY NOW!
It has come to my attention that some of you don't know about a game which has been around for a few years now: Shattered Galaxy.
http://www.sgalaxy.com/
Shattered Galaxy is basically a MMORTS. You have squads of units which you customize the equipment loadout on. You then use these squads to help your teammates fight in short (10-15 minute) battles. As your units level up, your character levels up as well, which gives you access to better units, cooler tech, etc.
The best part about the game is you can play completely FREE. The download is free and you don't have to pay for an account. You have access to nearly all units, and the only penalties for not paying for an account are:
* There are some max level caps for some of your units/abilities -- these are fairly high though
* There are some small XP/damage nerfs -- something like 10%, I dunno
* I believe your character may get reset every 3 months?
However, those are fairly minor, and if you love the game you can always pay.
There's also all kinds of crazy features I'm not very familiar with (not normally a massively multiplayer gamer) involving politics, apprenticeship, forming your own "clans" (sort of... forget what they're really called), etc. Someone who knows the game better could fill in more there.
Here are two guides for new players that should help explain what the game is, what you do, what the units are, etc.: (keep reading the thread for the second one)
http://www.sg-city.com/ibf/index.php?showtopic=6439
And here in this thread (the original post) are some of my conversations with friends regarding which units are better, etc.:
http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=9637392
Anyway, I'm going to go play now, so hope to see you there!

I rarely use the words 'sell out' but does it sound that Green Day has gone a bit too pop than they normally do? I know they've never been much of a 'true punk' band, but American Idiot is a little too poppy.
I'm glad my ipod is here to save me.

Is this game REALLY supposed to be this difficult? I can't even get past mission 2(where you fight the first boss). This is retarted. I'm thinking about returning it because its just not fun when you can't even finish mission 2 :(
Corny dialog, corny cut scenes. Neat action I guess. But holy damn I cannot believe the first boss should be this difficult.

Accounts Closed For Ladder Abuse
Tuesday, March 2, 2005
Approximately 4,000 accounts have been closed for various abuses of the Warcraft III ladders, including the use of "loss bots." Blizzard maintains an aggressive stance against cheating of all kind and will continue to ensure that the Battle.net ladders are a fair and safe place to play Warcraft III. The accounts in question have been closed, and the affected players have been barred from ladder play on any account for a period of 30 days. In cases where this is the second instance of abuse or cheating, the accounts have been permanently banned from all ladder play.
To report suspected use of map hacks, please email hacks@blizzard.com with as much information as possible. A false report filed by one player against another will not result in action against the falsely accused party. To report suspected abuses of the Warcraft III ladders, please visit the Battle.net forums for further information.

very good novel with a pretty decent ending. global wars and emperors and godesses and caliphs all plotting against one another is just so cool to read about. theres one thing in the novel that remains unresolved but i guess it gives Card a good option to write more novels using these characters.
now i want to re-read all the ender sequels.. been too long and i've completely forgotten what happened in them.

A rant in A Minor
So, today I had my THIRD HM204DT swapout,
Powered it up whilst the delivery guy was still here and rejected it on the spot.
history of narg:
original display: developed a nasty 'jitter'
1st replacement: after 30-45 minutes of poweron time, a two inch band down the RHS of the screen lost focus.
2nd replacement: uneven focusing, uneven colour (dark bits, bright bits, light bits, dark bits.)
3rd replacement: totally out of focus, across the entire screen.
They're doing me a swapout for an HM204DTA (which I can't work out the difference from the HM204DT, spec sheet reads identically as far as I can tell.)
if it isn't absolutely flawless... I... *twitch*
a Dell 2405FPW is becoming very very very tempting at this point...
Nobody ever heard of an out of focus TFT goddamnit.

Now I need a laptop bag. I don't want it to look like a standard Dell laptop bag, but I don't want it to scream "steal me, I'm a laptop!", either. I'm thinking about something in a backpack form, but hopefully not large enough that the 12" flops around like goldfish on the bathroom floor. Suggestions on brands? The smallest ones I see on the Apple store look like man purses. On the other hand, I already have a briefcase-type-shoulder-thing, so maybe a laptop "sleeve" might to the trick. Thoughts/ideas? 'preciate it!

At the end of the show, right before the commercials started, there was a weird 3 to 5 second flash of the word "Omnium Finis Imminet". It kind of flashed into place, and was a sort of on "fire". I'm sure it's a commercial for something, but it kinda of freaked me out.

when downloading something you get to chose what you want firefox to do with the file, and there's the "do this automatically for files like this from now on" tick box - but no matter how much I tick that box it never works right. Take torrent files for example, on sime sites they open straight away in Azureus, and on other sites I get the download window again :(
anyone else had this and managed to fix it?

A friend of mine sent it to me, and while I'm not normally into the whole feminist thing, this seems like a pretty legitimate complaint...but I'm curious what you guys think, since most of us here are men.

The first time I went to Stratholme I about crapped, it was cool as hell looking but the mobs were insane. It didn't seem to be as problematic as I'd read, but there were obvious bugs. And what the hell is with greedy people? =\

Yes, I know they already exist everywhere and probably ones with exactly the same features I need - but I need something to do to keep off the boredom.
Anyway, what options should I include for generating the password?
I'll do the standard options obviously (length, mixed case, numbers, special characters), but is there anything else I should consider?
ie, any well used systems that may need extra rules on the passwords they use.
Finalyl - should I do it in JS or PHP?

Meh. Pretty fun game. Reminds me a whole lot of Secret of Mana. Storyline was pretty predictable, which is always a letdown in a story-heavy RPG. Combat was fun, but it doesn't change throughout the game, ergo it gets boring. Having a few different options of paths due to interactions with characters is cool. The ending was a bit weak. Would've liked something more substantial.
In the end, I'd give it a 6 out of 10. Too long, dynamic enough, not enough fun.

The Bad: Kate Winslett wasn't quite deserving of the Oscar, but I haven't seen MDB, so Swank's performance might have been not as good, I dunno. Im not here to judge.
She SHOULD however gotten nominated for ESotSM instead.
The movie was a tit-bit cliche, BUT...
The Good: I enjoyed the everliving fuck out of the movie. Speaking of cliches, I laughed, I cried, I walked out not wanting my money back.
I also saw Get Shorty on DVD. And I enjoyed that so much that I think Im going to watch it again right now.
