my 5 year old daughter broke her arm tonight at gymnastics.
i was on the cell phone with my wife on my way home from work when the gym called. allison's arm was broken, and they were calling an ambulance. i told my wife to go, and i'd be there as soon as i could. apparently the break was pretty bad. longest 15 minute drive ever.
we live about 5 minutes from the gym, so my wife beat the ambulance there, and i was only about 2 minutes behind them. allison was out on the floor, right where she had fallen. they had cleared all the other girls out of the area since any vibrations from the bouncy gymnastics floor would have caused her even more pain.
when i got there, the paramedics were making sure she could still wiggle her fingers and such, but she was crying so much, she didn't really respond. they moved the icebags away and i got a good view of her arm.
i work in the web industry, and in my time, i've seen my share of injuries. in my professional opinion, it was definitely broken. the "S" shape of the forearm was a dead giveaway. seriously, it looked like she had an extra wrist joint. the break was bent back like your wrist would bend if you were pushing open a door. her actual wrist was bent forward, like when you hold your arm out in the air and let your hand go limp. both of the bones in her forearm were broken, about 3-4 inches from her wrist. it wasn't sticking through the skin or anything, thank god. i'm pretty squeamish when it comes to watching videos where people break bones (joe theismann and the like), but strangely enough, seeing her arm didn't bother me at all. maybe it was because i was more concerned about her to care. i don't know.
the paramedics put a soft board under her arm for support, got her up on the stretcher and took her to the ambulance. in there, they gave her a tiny bit of morphine to calm her down. my wife rode with them to the hospital, and i took my son with me in the car. one of the gymnastics coaches also went to the hospital with us. that was nice. turns out she broke it doing a fairly simple maneuver that she's done a hundred times before. i don't remember the name for it, but it's basically a backbend combined with a kick-over. like a back handspring where you don't actually leave the ground. she went back a little funny and that was it. just a freak thing.
the ER got us in pretty quickly, and did all they could to make her comfortable during the xrays. it was a busy night in the
ER, so we had to wait for a bit, but it wasn't too bad. allison slept most of the time, since they had given her demorol when she arrived. after she woke up, she was calm as could be. she wasn't in much pain anymore now that the initial shock had worn off.
my main concern was having a break bad enough to need surgery or pins or some other major intervention. turns out she didn't need any of that. the orthopedic doctor they called into the ER was very good, and took her to the operating room as soon as it cleared out. they gave her some light anesthesia, set the break, gave her a splint, a sling, and an icepack, and we went to pick up some pain medication from the pharmacy. by the time we left the hospital, allison was awake, alert, and having fun being pushed around in the wheelchair.
all in all, it was about 5 hours at the hospital. the gymnastics coach stayed with us the whole time, too. she watched our son a few times, and stayed to keep my wife company when i went out to get some food. she was great.
so now we're all home and content. she'll wear the splint for about two weeks, then go back in and get a cast that she'll wear for about four weeks. six weeks total is really good, especially for a break that looked as bad as that one. we should be getting a hold of the xrays in a few weeks, and i'll be sure to post them on the internet to gross you guys out.
she's a tough little trooper. i'm sure she'll be back at gymnastics as soon as the doctor gives her the all clear.
the end.

What are the easiest optimizations to perform?
Branch elimination for stuff like if(true), method elimination for functions that take no arguments and return a constant.. anything along those lines are good.
I have a project to do exactly this, and I want to do an outstanding job with it, so I'm asking for your help in simple and useful compiler tweaks to squeeze efficiency out of a program.
Thank yee!

WASHINGTON, DC—In a surprise press conference Monday, President Bush said he will not rest until the warehouse where the Ark of the Covenant, the vessel holding the original Ten Commandments, is located. "Nazis stole the Ark in 1936, but it was recovered by a single patriot, who braved gunfire, rolling boulders, and venomous snakes," Bush said, addressing the White House press corps. "Sadly, due to bureaucratic rigmarole, this powerful, historic relic was misplaced in a warehouse. Mark my words: We will find that warehouse." Bush added that, after they are strengthened by the power of the Ark, U.S. forces will seek out and destroy the sinister Temple of Doom.

I am a 26 tauren druid, and I like to explore. Today I said "I want to see gadgetzan!" I worked my way down past the great lift, found the shimmering flats raceway (SO COOL! and you can get a chicken for a pet!) And finally worked my way down south to gadgetzan. I was dissapointed by what I found, so I decided to explore even further.
I saw a sign for steamwheel cartel (or something like that) so I headed that way. It was just a small port village with a fishing vender and something else. You know why I say something else? I didnt have time to tell because my screen was filled with mounts. And no, they werent the good kinds of mounts. They were the "We are gonna fuck your corpse to further humiliate you after will kill you" kind of mounts (aka alliance.)
I wave in a vain attempt to vacate their bloodlust, but they decide to send a pet after me. Thankfully, it wasnt that much higher than me, and by occasionally healing myself I didnt die. So I guess their priest told them not to kill me, because I saw a lot of emotes such as her blowing kisses and the others saying "NO!" Anyway, they let me be, and there was much rejoicing.
But no. I had to go and push my luck. I waited till they were out of sight, and headed back into town again. I wanted to see what the town had to offer. Suddenly, I get scared shitless. A big purple skull appears over me, and I know that my doom has come. As I run like a chicken with its head chopped off, I decide I need to get out of there NOW. I hide behind a rock, but my hearth stone gets interrupted by another bout of fear. I see that more are coming, and I know I am in the shitter. So I do what any sensible person would do. Run like a black man after the last piece of fried chicken on earth. (Sorry, had to insert a random joke for those that dont care about WoW but have somehow read this far.) I dive into the ocean, and make use of the ugliest motherfucker ever spawned by game artists: Seal form. I swim as fast as I can, and I see they are following me. So I get a good lead, swim below the trench into the deep ocean, and use the hearthstone. 5 breathtaking seconds later, I am alive and well in crossroads, with a fucking heart attack in real life.

All my life I figured I was a touch obsessive compulsive about certain thing, but recently my wife met someone who cleared things up for me. I'm getting temporarily layed off soon (happened before, no big deal) and the wife is lining some contract work up for me. Anyway, the person she was talking to apparently has Aspergers Syndrome and the wife was noticing how similar that person acts compared to me.
Anyway, I just read up on it (having never heard of it before) and it pretty much suits me to a tee: http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/aswhatisit.html. Basically, it's like a really mild form of autism. It affects how you interact socially and explains some of my (minor) obsessive compulsiveness. I think I might have to visit the doctor and find out for sure!
Not that it really bothers me, but it'd be nice to be more open to people that I don't really know :( I'm a social person inside, but I have trouble striking up conversation with people sometimes.

Things I didn't like so much: it was really easy, totally linear, no real set goals (just kinda running around by the seat of your pants), load times and hitching (probably just my hardware), the dumbest sidekicks ever known to man (they were absolutely useless...they would obey commands for about 2 seconds then they're crowding around you blocking you again)
Things I loved: Characters you can actually get attached to (barney, the scientists, alex, dog etc), you are the uberbadass (when you walk in the room they're all "shit gordons here all our problems are solved"), story though short was interesting, nifty weapons, AMAZING environment, unsurpassed graphics (IMO other games are lucky to tie or come close to tying...the game looks amazing), unique enemies, characters, art, weapons and levels.
I'd have to say at this point that the only game I've ever liked more is Deus Ex. I honestly believe it is a leap beyond other games in the category in terms of interaction etc (deus ex is in a different category).
The only thing that could make me happier is a new Deus Ex style game with this kind of engine.
