Late Night Consoling
by Alec Matias, Feb 22, 2005 8:00pm PSTThe day many of you have been waiting for has arrived: release day for Gran Turismo 4. A quick glance at GameRankings shows it holding at 92%, which is very respectable. It's actually a decrease compared to GT3: A-Spec, which had a 94%, but it is a fresh release. Just wait until all the fan sites start giving it 100s and that score will be inflated. While I do know this is an anticipated big release, I was surprised to hear my girlfriend tell me our local GameStop had a line of over a hundred people waiting for the game. While I do live near a big college, that's still quite a lot of people. Don't forget to chime in with your opinion!
- Late last month, reports out of Japan suggested that the square button of the PSP was not responding properly, causing SCE president Ken Kutaragi to comment, "I believe we made the most beautiful thing in the world. Nobody would criticize a renowned architect's blueprint that the position of a gate is wrong. It's the same as that." Well, turns out there was a problem, just not with the button per se, but the case. Some units have excess plastic that wasn't removed during production causing some buttons to stick when depressed. Sony has a free repair program underway and commented, "This problem does not occur in the units produced in 2005," and that there "are about 0.6% of the 510,000 units shipped in 2004."

[psp] - Capcom's cel-shaded adventure game, Killer 7, finally has a release date. It'll ship in the US on June 7, Europe on June 24, and sometime in the summer for Japan. This news relates to the GameCube version, as the PlayStation 2 port is still under development.

[gcn] [ps2] - Over at their official site, Sega has a poll up asking their users different Sonic The Hedgehog related questions. For instance, it asks you to pick your favorite character from the Sonic universe and to also rank platform characters, such as Jak and Mario, on a scale of 1-10. Most interesting, however, is that it asks who you'd find most suitable for their own game: Tails, Shadow, Knuckles, Dr. Eggman, or Amy. While this confirms nothing about future titles, it at least shows that a possible Sonic spin-off is in their plans.

[sega] - Branded controllers continue to be the latest peripheral fad as Intec has announced three Star Wars-based controllers for the PS2 and Xbox. They don't really bear much resemblance to equipment in the films; the only indication that they have something to do with Star Wars is a logo in the middle of the pad. Two of the pads glow while the third, painted black, is wireless. The wireless pad lasts 60 hours on 2 AA batteries and sells for $29.99 whereas the corded version sells at $19.99. There's also a two-pack for $29.99. Check the link for pictures.

[ps2] [xbox] - Last week, Nintendo released the Play-Yan, a GBA cart that houses an SD card so you can listen to music and watch movies on your GBA or DS. Unfortunately, Nintendo discovered a problem and have recalled all units. The defect is that it plays audio on reverse channels; sounds from the left comes out of the right speaker. There was good news as Nintendo launched Garage Games today, a program that'll release a new game for download every week (for at least the next three months) to use with the Play-Yan.

This interview is from the 24 Januar:
The problem originated in some of the metal molds that produced the front covers with holes for the operating buttons swerving from where they should have been. SCE is repairing the defective portions. About 0.6% of all the PSPs sold already have been repaired for glitches in the buttons.
Another quote from the same Interview:
"I think I made the most beautiful game machine in the world. When a prominent architect comes up with a plan, nobody is going to pick holes in it and say, for instance, the position of the gates isn't right. The same is true with our PSP."
YES IT'S THE SAME FUCKING INTERVIEW
