Late Night Consoling

A genre that has never been able to take off on either the console or handheld platform is that of the Real-Time Strategy (RTS). If you thought playing a FPS with a gamepad was awkward, imagine trying to use one with WarCraft III. Ask any owner of StarCraft 64; it was a miserable nightmare; it just doesn't work. However, if there's one place the genre can thrive, it's clearly the Nintendo DS. In my review of the Tapwave Zodiac so long ago, the only game I felt that was worth a purchase was Warfare Incorporated. Thanks to the touch screen and stylus, you could finally enjoy a RTS away from the desktop computer. If Age of Empires is truly coming to the Nintendo DS, it has a serious chance of being a commercial and critical success. Massive land wars with a group of buddies any time, any place... that sounds very appealing.

    [ps2] [xbox]

The Hollywood Reporter discovered that big-name actors will offer their voices and likeness for the upcoming The Godfather game. Announced so far are James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Marlon Brando. Before Brando's passing, EA had struck a deal with him and he already had done his voice-over work as Don Vito Corleone. The actors' likenesses from 1972 is what will be used in the game.

  • Take-Two Drops ESPN

    [ps2] [xbox]

Although Take-Two Interactive could still release ESPN MLB 2K5 with the ESPN brand attached since EA's new deal with the sports network doesn't go into effect until next year, Take-Two has decided to drop ESPN from the baseball game's title. It will now be called Major League Baseball 2K5. However, all the in-game presentation will still feature the ESPN brand. The game is still set for release on March 15.

For the US and Europe release of Metal Gear Acid, it will now support a two player multiplayer mode. Two players can go head-to-head in the Virtual Reality environments found in console games. Skills and card sets will still be used. This was axed from the Japanese version to get it out around the launch of the handheld.

  • Advent Children Possibly Coming to a Theater Near You

    [psp]

When it was announced way back when, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was to be a shorter-than-average film showcased on the PSP. • Europe MGS3 to Have Exclusive Features

    [ps2]

Konami will thank its European fans for being so patient with Metal Gear Solid 3's release by adding exclusive features to the PAL version. Three new game modes are added: Duel Mode, where players can play strictly the boss battles only; Demo Theatre, where all the cinematics are showed looped together; and a new extreme difficulty. Also added are new maps for Snake vs. Monkey mode and new face paint designs.

  • Majesco's DS Lineup Revealed?

    [nds]

Another leak has sprung at a prominent publisher's website. GamesAreFun is reporting that earlier in the day, in their Nintendo DS list, the company had these four unannounced titles listed: Age of Empires, Jaws, Quad Desert Fury 2, and Texas Hold 'Em. Most surprising is the Nintendo DS port of Age of Empires. If there is platform that could support it best, it'd be the NDS with its touch screen and stylus interface. Majesco has since removed the information.

AOE was released for PocketPC, so a DS port isn't wholly without precedent.

Yeah, hopefully a DS port will be better than the PocketPC version though.
