Working on a 1/2 page ad for my city's airport authority, and we now have direct flights to and from Boston on Delta (and they are advertising this bigtime in a new magazine).
Trying to come up with some good taglines for the ad.
Gotta be stuff that Canadians would recognize as "Boston"-esque.
Thanks in advance!

and the Gearbox guys were going on and on about how amazingly realistic it the game was, and all I could think was
1) How clean everything looked. I mean, have you watched Band of Brothers? Every scene in that series was totally covered in dirt. Everytime a bullet hit the ground, or a grenade went off, there were particles of dirt flying all over the place. Smoke everywhere, grime smeared all over everyone's faces from hitting the dirt everytime the bullets start flying.
2) How awkward and unnatural the animations looked. I'm not saying the animations were any better or worse than other games I've seen... well, besides 3D fighting games... or stuff like ninja gaiden, but it just looked like the same ol same ol canned animations that have been in games since they stopped doing vector animation and stated animating bones. Around the N64 days if I recall, if not earlier. Maybe I'm expecting too much. I can only hope the next generation of games does more than have canned animation. Interactivity with environments, people leaning on walls as they look around corners, touching things in the world, not just pressing against them or clipping partially through them.
Normally that stuff doesn't bug me so much, but with them going on and on in the vid about how realistic everything is, I couldn't help think to myself, "That doesn't really look very realistic"
Maybe they weren't talking about the visuals though, maybe they were talking about squad tactics and recreating some French town down to the last brick.

For a while, I have used a plain black background on my desktop.
I think I want....no...NEED...a kickass wallpaper.
I know some of you have some badass wallpapers, so if you could post a link to your favourites it would be great.

Also, its probably a good thing that I'm not working on a TF sequel. Some of the gameplay tweaks that crossed my mind tonight as I was goofing around would probably cause Robin Walker to mail a big box of poop to my house if he read them! :o
Good stuff though. I hope I can get in on a Shackbattle soon.

Alec mentioned Mario 2 USA being a relabel of Doki Doki Panic. For those who don't know, Mario 2 JAP was released in the US under the name "Super Mario: Lost Levels."
Has anyone here beaten them? I have, with more lives then you can imagine. The game saves what level you're in (e.g. 4-3, 4-4), and gives you unlimited lives/continues.
8-3 and 8-4 were incredibly difficult. Might be time for a replay...

THERE IS HUGE interest over Microsoft's next generation Windows Longhorn operating system and people are just as interested in its graphic engine. It's called Avalon and will represent the next step forward in graphic engines, the Vole believes.
The Avalon beta is here. It's a 200MB plus download so beware.
Use it at your own risk.
Great. I wonder if it'll be worth the bloat.

Bought my first very own belt sander (<3) with a vacuum feature to prevent massive dust-clouds and am planning on refinishing my kitchen cabinetry. Since it's an old kitchen some of the doors have those little decorative nitches on them. Also, I'm cheap. So.. do I need to buy a detail sander in order to get to them properly or should some tricky handling with the belt-sander suffice? The nitches are about 1cm deep & I believe I'm dealing with solid oak pieces (it's an old kitchen). Also, what grade of sandpaper would you recommend for the final finishing?
TIA :)

Unfortunately I was terminated from my job this morning so I have joined the ranks of the unemployed. So I usually don't solicit donations for the Teamspeak/Game server but this month I am because the "slush," fund I use to pay for it has to go towards bills this month. In exchange for your donation you will not only continue to recieve superior service and dedication for the Shackhyped MP game of the month but I want to hold a giveaway.
Basically I'm going to select a shacker from the donations I recieve and send them a box full of cool stuff as a thanks for supporting the server; including an opened but brand-new copy of Mercenaries for the XBOX I'm always that believes in "paying it forward," but the Shack is filled with cool people. I would Ebay a lot of my stuff; but the payment is due at the end of month and I would like to continue to run it. I would probably discontinue the server but I have a good feeling I'll be with a new job in a month or two and I also don't want to lose my place in the server farm.
So if you wish to help out the server donate through PayPal here:
https://www.paypal.com/xclick/business=rdavis542%40comcast.net&no_note=1&tax=0¤cy_code=USD
Please include in the notes section:
1) Your Shackname
2) Your shipping address
Please note that the amount you donate does not have sway in my decision, but I'd say five dollars would be the minimum donation; this would at least cover your postage of the stuff. Basically you'd be getting a bunch of cool stuff for free. And in a few days I'll let the shacker know when their stuff is in the mail. If you think donations are inappropriate, etc. I can respect that. Deadline for this is 11 pm est tomorrow night and I will send out your stuff by the end of the week.

According to his mother, my nephew is dyslexic, hence his bad grades in anything that requires reading. However, he's a wiz at math, and apparently has no problem reading numbers. My question is, how is this possible? Numbers and letters are fundamentally the same: Black symbols on a white field. I don't see why the number 7 would be legible to a dyslexic but not the letter L. You could teach some young dyslexic kid that the number 5 is actually the letter A and they'd be none the wiser. So someone gimme an opinion.. I suspect her claim of the boy's dyslexia is total BS.

STUPIDITY IS a great leveller. No matter how much cash you have you can always make us common folk feel good by being 'stupider' than us. This is why the latest 'Rich but Dumb Git from IT Award' goes to Kevin Rollins, new CEO of PC behemoth Dell. Six months after slipping into Michael Dell's loafers, Rollins has obviously passed his probation and been allowed to speak publicly. What a mistake that was. Just like real life, technology celebs also have their moments of idiocy. They might not rank up there with Senator Bob Dole's 'the Internet is a great way to get on the Net' or Britney Spears saying she "gets to go to lots of overseas places, like Canada", but they'll do. Dell's Rollins gave a new meaning to the term 'sour grapes' while also adding a new 'I wish I hadn't said that' quote to the Book of Classic IT Quotes.
In a recent interview, speaking about the iPod he dropped these pearls of wisdom: "Well, those things that become fads rage and then they drop off. When I was growing up there was a product made by Sony called the Sony Walkman - a rage, everyone had to have one. Well, you don't hear about the Walkman anymore." Ouch. Poor Apple – and Sony. Sheesh. After all it's hard work, the iPod is officially a fad. Dell said so, so it must be true. Coming from a company desperate to make money from non-PC products – including it's own MP3 players – do I detect a certain, unmistakable whiff of envy?
We don't hear about the Walkman anymore because Sony decided to drive their CE division into a ditch and stay there for five years. Also, the cassette is dead with CD-Rs being popular for seven years, and Sony's CD player designs have been laughable for about that time length. It's like they decided to stop improving it long ago.
