  • My dad got a divorce from my mom when he was 41. He's 49 now and has been seeing a lady (about same age, never married, no kids) for a few years now. He's planning on marrying her.

My question is, is it normal to make a big deal over a wedding when you're older? Maybe it's a mid-life crisis type of thing?

    The "problem" :

My dad lives in a 3 bedroom ranch right now that is a nice modest home. It can hold five people easily. My two brothers (teenagers) live with their mom 6 hours away so they only visit during part of the summer and during winter/spring break. When they visit my dad they room together (bunk beds) and it's fine. I'm in college so I visit about the same time they do and get a room to myself. The logical thing to do if my dad gets married is she move in with him, right? No.

My dad is spending a bunch of money and probably putting a huge debt on himself to buy a new (less than 2 years old) house in a pretty ritzy neighborhood. This house is gigantic. It probably costs 3x the house my dad lives in right now.

The thing is it's not like my dad is going to raise a family- he already has. Plus he's had a vasectomy and I don't think my dad or his lady friend plan on adopting. So basically he's buying a huge house in a fancy neighborhood and he and his wife will live in it while sporadically me and my two brothers will visit. 90% of the time it will just be two people living in it.

    Also:

Instead of getting married immediately my dad and his lady friend are getting married in the summer so that all their friends and family will be able to come to the wedding. My dad's lady friend is "super catholic" so maybe Catholic weddings are like this? I can understand for young people the importance of inviting lots of people to your wedding- you get tons of gifts to help you start a new life and family. The thing is both my dad and his lady friend work, they aren't hurting for money and they aren't starting a new family.

I'm happy for my dad that he's getting married but it just seems "strange" what he is doing. New big house in a nice neighborhood, big wedding...

My grandfather on my dad's side died when he was 55. He was a heavy smoker and drinker though (my dad doesn't smoke and he is not overweight) and was very overweight. My dad is 50 in about a week so maybe he just wants to maximize his utility because based off his family history he isn't going to live into his 80's? :(

Or maybe my dad's lady friend is so obsessed with this "reality shows" like The Bachelor and she has to have the perfect wedding. Thoughts? :p
