Late Night Consoling
by Alec Matias, Dec 27, 2004 7:00pm PSTHope the holidays are going well for everybody out there! I spent the weekend with my parents in South Florida. I had bought my father a PS2 for his birthday earlier this month along with the Ace Combat 5 bundle, which included a Hori flight stick. Being the old fogey that he is, he wasn't getting the hang of it so I gave it a whirl. Now, I haven't been following the Ace Combat series so I didn't know what to expect and I was quickly surprised to find that it has an actual story... one that is pretty damn compelling. On top of that, the flight stick works like a charm and I immediately told my father I was borrowing it for the week. I hope I don't lose interest in this like I did with Steel Battalion. =(
- So before TeamXbox went on holiday break, they stuffed their readers' stockings with this delicious rumor. Already reported on by the Official Xbox Magazine, Microsoft and Bungie are planning to release Halo 2.5 as a launch title for the Xbox 2. TeamXbox uncovered some of the first details regarding the game from an unidentified source. "Halo 2.5 will be an Xbox 2 launch title and is going to run in HDTV resolution with new, improved textures and graphical effects. All the stuff that people expected from Halo 2 but didn't make the cut will be there. The technology that powers Halo 2 has been designed from day one to take advantage of the next generation hardware," the insider said. "In Halo 2, the Xbox was pushed to its limits but now the game will reach new heights with the advanced hardware." If that wasn't enough, the source floated this out. "Now, here is the twist. Halo 2.5 will come preloaded with the optional HDD. It'll be one of the two reasons to get the Xbox 2 that comes with a hard drive. The other reason... well, you'll just have to wait." Dun dun duuuuun!
Halo 2.5 for Xbox 2?
[xbox] - Reporting out of Japan suggests that Nintendo's follow-up to the GameCube, currently codenamed Revolution, will break from the norm in terms of its controller. Japanese business magazine Shuukan Diamond stated in their 2005 Preview Edition that the Revolution's controller will ditch the d-pad along with the A and B buttons. Of course, Nintendo has all along said it intends to innovate with their new hardware, so this isn't a shocker. Nintendo will unveil the console at next year's E3 in May.
Nintendo's Revolution Doing Something Revolutionary?
[gcn] - Ubisoft announced that the follow-up to Prince of Persia: Sands of Time has already doubled sales of the original. Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within has sold 1.8 million copies worldwide, topping the charts in the United States and United Kingdom. Pretty good for a game that hasn't been getting as much press as other titles this holiday season.

According to Square Enix, "the tale follows the adventures of brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric on their quest to make right the mistakes of their past." It'll be priced at $39.99 and rated T for teen.
Fullmetal Alchemist Dated
[ps2] - For years, I've been at the mercy of slowdown when playing NES games. Now, thanks to the dudes at Epic Gaming, I can get a sweet 230% overclock of my trusty 'ol NES! Actually, I looked at the guide and couldn't figure out WTF was going on, but it's still cool nonetheless.

I'm a Nintendophile, and I've been looking at their statements..and more important..Nintendo's technology over the last few years. I have a pretty good idea of what Revolution is going to be. Nothing inside or official, but I like my theory:)
What is Nintendo's BIG technologies that they are developing. Wireless. Good lithium batteries. LCD screens. Flash content transfers. Touchscreen interface.
How could you extend those technologies for a new system? They've said multiple times that the technology can't, at least for them, go up, it has to go out.
Here's my concept. The controllers would be more than just a controller. LCD touchscreen, wireless or wired controller..but the game concepts..you need to hear the concepts to understand it.
Goldeneye. Each player has their screen, in full good quality 60 fps on their screen. So nobody can see each others screen. You don't even NEED a TV to play this thing, although if it's hooked up, you'll see things such as kill-cams, security cameras, score displays, etc. All theatrical like for people who are watching.
Or think of like what WarioWare could do with a concept. Hell, if there's enough flash ram, you could play a single player adventure such as Viewtiful Joe...except more than one person could play..their own game at a time. It's all a matter of how flexible and powerful the machine is.
Or new Mario party concepts. Or Final Fantasy:CC done to the next level. Zelda Four Swords, the sequel in true 3d on each screen?
Instead of needing the GBA as a side-device, the LCD would be built into the controller, which if I'm not wrong, I think that Nintendo has reduced to a pretty damn cheap price at this point, and more games can make use of this to its fullest.
It would be the ultimate party machine. Don't even need a TV. Plug it in and GO. At camp, at work, wherever. Just plug it in and play. Keep it at a good size and make a nice carying backpack...
And what you have is literally a revolution.

It makes a lot of sense, especially since many people will still want to play Halo 2 online and would see no reason to upgrade since Xbox 2 won't be backward compatabile.

Re: Warrior Within
Please take note.
If you make something you think gamers should like, but it doesn't sell:
Don't be pussies and drop any chance of any follow-ups. Tell your audience they're wrong, they should want more, deliver more and watch it sell.
Here's to hoping we see some good sales figures for Viewtiful Joe 2 as well.
