Late Night Consoling

by Alec Matias, Dec 27, 2004 7:00pm PST

Hope the holidays are going well for everybody out there! I spent the weekend with my parents in South Florida. I had bought my father a PS2 for his birthday earlier this month along with the Ace Combat 5 bundle, which included a Hori flight stick. Being the old fogey that he is, he wasn't getting the hang of it so I gave it a whirl. Now, I haven't been following the Ace Combat series so I didn't know what to expect and I was quickly surprised to find that it has an actual story... one that is pretty damn compelling. On top of that, the flight stick works like a charm and I immediately told my father I was borrowing it for the week. I hope I don't lose interest in this like I did with Steel Battalion. =(

  • Halo 2.5 for Xbox 2?

    [xbox]
So before TeamXbox went on holiday break, they stuffed their readers' stockings with this delicious rumor. Already reported on by the Official Xbox Magazine, Microsoft and Bungie are planning to release Halo 2.5 as a launch title for the Xbox 2. TeamXbox uncovered some of the first details regarding the game from an unidentified source. "Halo 2.5 will be an Xbox 2 launch title and is going to run in HDTV resolution with new, improved textures and graphical effects. All the stuff that people expected from Halo 2 but didn't make the cut will be there. The technology that powers Halo 2 has been designed from day one to take advantage of the next generation hardware," the insider said. "In Halo 2, the Xbox was pushed to its limits but now the game will reach new heights with the advanced hardware." If that wasn't enough, the source floated this out. "Now, here is the twist. Halo 2.5 will come preloaded with the optional HDD. It'll be one of the two reasons to get the Xbox 2 that comes with a hard drive. The other reason... well, you'll just have to wait." Dun dun duuuuun!
  • Nintendo's Revolution Doing Something Revolutionary?

    [gcn]
Reporting out of Japan suggests that Nintendo's follow-up to the GameCube, currently codenamed Revolution, will break from the norm in terms of its controller. Japanese business magazine Shuukan Diamond stated in their 2005 Preview Edition that the Revolution's controller will ditch the d-pad along with the A and B buttons. Of course, Nintendo has all along said it intends to innovate with their new hardware, so this isn't a shocker. Nintendo will unveil the console at next year's E3 in May.
  • The Warrior Within Sells a Metric Buttload

    [ps2] [xbox] [gcn]
Ubisoft announced that the follow-up to Prince of Persia: Sands of Time has already doubled sales of the original. Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within has sold 1.8 million copies worldwide, topping the charts in the United States and United Kingdom. Pretty good for a game that hasn't been getting as much press as other titles this holiday season.

Console Game Of The Evening [Submit Yours!]

Bigfoot for the NES. "Race bigwheeled property across vast mudpits by rapidly tapping the controller back and forth. Your thumb gets visibly raw, and the best part is you can veto the final score tally through a bug and undeservedly win the whole game!" (submitted by SLUDGE^).
