by Maarten Goldstein, Dec 23, 2004 10:06am PSTCan't shake this damn jetlag it seems, keep waking up real late or early. Worst I've had it since I slept for 13 hours straight after coming back from Los Angeles a few years ago. Christmas seems like a good time to get back on schedule though. Movie: We buried you. There was a coffin, a gravestone... the whole thing.

I expected that div#useroptions would have a yellow background; it does in IE6, but not Firefox 1. Any ideas why? Also, is there any better way to have two items aligned at opposite ends of a DIV? From what I've read, floating objects can give rise to a lot of "interesting" problems..........

mp3 files glitch out. data reading off the drive takes long pauses.
And attempts to copy data from the drive result in crc errors eventually.
What software do I use to recover as much of this data as possible and/or check and fix the problems on the disk?

Come join shacknews room (not #shacknews, this isn't irc)
Download soulseek from www.slsknet.org if you're interested.
For me, slsk > shack DC hub because
1. I can still be browsing files on the rest of the slsk network, unlike DC++
2. You can add people (shackers) to your 'special' list and give them privilages (hidden directories, download spaces)
3. It's got a dedicated chatroom, just like DC++
4. Slsk is pretty cool anyway.
So come one, come all, and for every person who joins, I'll donate £1 to my TV License fund.

I love that MMO's can update and change content at will. What a wonderful way to keep me interested in the game! Unfortunately, I'm not comfortable with subscriptions, but games like Guild Wars give me hope that not all MMO games will go that direction.
But, as much as I enjoy the constant content update, it worries me that changes might be made that'll really take away my enjoyment of the game. Take this whole paladin situation in WoW. I enjoyed being a paladin in the beta. I didn't reach a terribly high level, but it was fun. Now, imagine how frustrating it would be for an average joe player to log on one day and find out that something they could do the day before, something they enjoyed, they could no longer do (let's assume that they weren't griefing or anything. I'm talking about just using this ability, probably even in a PVE situation for an "average joe" player).
I mean, all "fairness" (to other classes, PvP and et al) aside, that's a really shitty situation. Who wants that? I could totally understand the reason why such "nerfs" might be necessary, but that doesn't change the fact that it'd totally shit on my enjoyment of the game.
It's just coincidence, I think, but the two classes I really enjoyed in beta were Rogue and Paladin - and they're the two classes I most frequently hear the mob asking to be nerfed. The good news is that Blizzard hasn't given in yet - they've worked on other ways to balance the game. But there's no way to know what'll happen. And the changes they make could be drastic. Imagine playing Doom3 and tearing shit up with the plasma rifle. It's fun. You love it. Then, after a patch, the plasma rifle does about half the damage it did before, and you hate it. At least you could not apply the patch. But, in a MMO situation, you're stuck with their decision.
Now, I realize that MMO developers are game developers, and they're just trying to reach an optimal balance, but that doesn't change the fact that altering stuff after a day, week, month or year, there's a window there where the player has become accustomed to playing the game a certain way. At any point, it could be changed on them, though.
And, thus, such concerns keep me away from MMO games for the most part. I'm very interested in WoW, but posts crying out for nerfing, etc (and my inability to find the CE, and the subscription cost...) keep me from getting it.
GW, though. GW gives me hope, if only in theory/concept.

my office is looking to move our old files (that are supposed to be kept around permanently) onto a digital format. off the top of my head, i'm thinking that using our pdf scanner thing and writeable digital media such as cd-r or dvd-r.
does anyone have any recommendations?
the idea is that we'd pull files a few at a time, scan them, archive them, and duplicate the archive for redundancy's sake. it doesn't need to be encrypted or anything, as we're currently just storing notebooks upon notebooks of paper in a storage unit that anybody could break into if they wanted to indulge in several hundred books full of insurance correspondence.
what would be the best media type to use? i recall reading that CD-Rs are not a good permanent archive solution.

from what I understand there's not a way to archive and "pak" up files to be distribuited with a map for Half-Life 2? you just toss around .BSP files and that's it?
I just spent some time looking into soundscapes and found this in the SDK docs "Can I make a custom soundscape for my level? Unless you're creating your own MOD, you can't create custom soundscapes for an individual level". Whoa nelly, weak.
theres not even a simple speaker entity to tie to a custom .wav, holy fuck. Liberace gay.
Uh oh I hope I dont run into more bad news about incvluding custom textures, but I think I am going to, consdering how closed and wonky the Steam+SDK system has been so far. Nice engine and decent documentation, how about actually letting us use it? Can't believe the work involved in faking out curve forms with brushes, either - jesus this is 2004, isnt it? I'm having Quake2 mapping flashbacks

Catherine Zeta-Jones is fucking smoking hot in that movie. She looks way hotter in the movie than she does in most pictures. Oh, and she looks super hot in those T-Mobile commercials. unf
