Gothic 3 Announced
by Maarten Goldstein, Dec 17, 2004 9:25am PSTLooks like JoWood recently issued this press release, announcing plans to create a third Gothic game. Thanks Blues News. The previous two games in the series were well liked around these parts.
"Our main efforts are to increase quality, atmosphere and fascination in Gothic III, to deliver an unbeatable RPG experience to all the Gothic fans out there. But even with all the improvements and innovations, we continue to build upon the unique concept of the Gothic titles", promises Mike Hoge, developer Piranha Bytes. No release date was mentioned.

The steps to making swords in Gothic 1 was just COOL. And cooking the meat, etc. It's just very immersive. The movement and combat was also cool...although I'd prefer something more like Arx Fatalis for the magic.
The crazy 'hot-bar'/auto-attack paradigm that were stuck with in MMORPGs is just so ultimately boring.

Gothic III is easily the number one game on my most wanted games list. Has been for quite a while. Even Half-Life 2 was on the second spot.
I first got to know Gothic by playing the english demo in 2001. I was simply blown away by it. Then I bought the english version of Gothic as soon as it was released and found out that it was the best 3rd person action/adventure/RPG game that I had ever played. Then in 2003 the english version of Gothic II was released and it was as good as the original, if not better (can't really say because I love both games so much).
The Gothic games are awesome singleplayer experiences with a good continuing story. You know... the kind of games that leave a permanent mark on your memory. Only Outcast can somewhat compete with the Gothic series.

I also am not a fan of the way they did character development. I think its a really crappy mechanism to make me play the game three times (and have to experience 80% of the game three times) just to play as the three possible character types (which DO have about 10-20% of their own side quests & story). Just combine them all together so the player gets it all in one pass and becomes the quintessential demigod like hero. If this were multiplayer of course you could never do that for balance reasons, but its single player... and I'll be dammed if I want to go through ALL the rest of the game multiple times just to get to try out the other two class professions. Besides it really is more rewarding if you give players multiple choices on how to solve the games puzzels rather than having to figure out what path they chose, THEN build the puzzels they must overcome.
Other than that, I REALLY love the focus points they say they are going to work on for this next version. The industry needs more games like this. :)
