I have to say I'm not fond of the super chunky weapon look. I don't think that weapons need to look like you're carrying around an engine block in order to look intimidating. In fact, it looks like lazy weapon design. I would think that in the future they'd actually have sleeker looking weapons than what we have now, made from... you know... futuristic... stuff. Ceramics or polymers or whatever. Not inch thick slabs of iron.
