EA & NFL Exclusive
by Steve Gibson, Dec 13, 2004 2:45pm PSTEA has just hit big for people who love NFL games. It looks like the only company you will see NFL games from that will include the official teams etc. from will be EA. Here's the PR:
These five-year agreements -- which EA negotiated separately -- give EA the exclusive rights to the NFL teams, stadiums and players for use in its football videogames. Both agreements also include exclusive rights for console online features. Financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed. For the first time, all aspects of the interactive experience -- including console-based fantasy football features and handheld game devices -- will be fully integrated with one EA game. This also provides the opportunity for new games and for EA to access both NFL Films and the NFL Network for use in the games.

It's cool, your money can keep you at the top for now, but there is a problem with your little formula here; If you pay your kids way through college, when he graduates, he is not as smart as the rest of the kids that graduated. When the time comes to perform, he is going to fail.
You are giving us five years to make one good game. You have to make one game every year for the next 6+ years. On that 6th year, when you finally have to perform, do you think you will be able to compete with us?
--To Madden fans: This is the last chance you will get to play the 2K series football for a while. I know you love madden, and that's cool, but you should really try NFL 2K5. It's a very good game, you will be quite surprised, and you will finally know what the big deal is. Then you can go back to madden (although you probably won't).
--To 2K fans: Sorry guys, we are going to make a football game next year, but it won't be NFL. There is a chance that EA could do this same thing with other sports. There is not much we can do about it. They are the Microsoft of videogames and they will do what they can to win.
Don't forget NFL, it will be back.

I think they're the only company that could have effectively blocked this.

Even EA can't stop you from doing that.
"<FL Journal> An announcement has been made by SEGA and ESPN in response to EA's NFL monopoly.
Today, after hearing the disgusting monopoly brought forth by Electronic Arts Sports, the Owning company of ESPN and funding partner of Sega, Disney/Walt Disney Ent. has made a statement.
'We never intended to press a game on a player, but to take action, like our customers have requested, Disney and Sega has came to a 6 year agreement with several organizations in the day's closing. Agreements and contracts include EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS to the NHL/NHLPA, NBA, NASCAR, and the MLB. Right's include sole use of players, teams, stadiums, parks, tracks, drivers, arenas and furthermore inclusions.'

this makes EA's game the only NFL game on the market now.
Let's say Sony does an exclusive with EA for PS3. Do you honestly think that the Xbox 2 has a chance?

How the fuck is this shit legal?
I see parallels in the Microsoft vs. Sun case.
Its like eating the market, WTF is that? You cant do that.
Its like the IE/Netscape thing, buy(or own) the assests, kick your competition out.
This is the worst. Fuck the NFL for going for this, total bullshit.
I was looking foward for NFL 2k6, Fuck Madden, I havent bought madden since '95 and they sure as hell arent gonna form a monopoly and get my money.
First the employee slaveshop thing and now this. Where the fuck is our government? They were at Enrons doors before anyone knew anything, and all this public shit on EA and they sit on their asses.
Hoo hum, this is American politics...

Also not part of the deal are, obviously, non-licensed football games. The first company to come forward to IGN with such a game is Midway, makers of classic sports titles like NFL Blitz and NBA Jam.
Midway has hired the writer of the show "Playmakers" to develop a new title, Blitz: Playmakers. The game will feature everything the NFL hated about the TV show, including drug use, and off-the-field habits the NFL likes to pretend never happens.
Haha, I like it already.

ESPN Football iswas the best sports series ever made, period. Madden is a great game, but to me hasn't made any innovative gameplay improvements in the last 4 releases while ESPN has for the last 3 straight years.

I'm trying not to resort to EA bashing here, but EA does not give the impression that its main focus is advancing the creative output gaming industry. They are completely focused on their bottom line. That is fine for a publishing company but not for a developper (which EA has become, as they choose what will or what will not be developped). This is a dangerous precident

-Sega has the rights/licensing agreement with ESPN
-ESPN has the rights (I believe) to use NFL names/etc in "media" (if i had to guess)
-Can sega make a game with ESPN as an official partner to get around this?
Likely no :p But still!

Does this mean that even if some developer were ballsy enough to try to make a football game with the NFL and NFLPA license they wouldn't be allowed to include online play? 0_o If so, how the fuck is this whole deal legal?

ESPN Football 2k5 - avg 91%
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/920177.asp?q=espn%20football
Madden 2k5 - avg 90%
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/919802.asp?q=madden
I don't understand all these people saying "just when ESPN football was catching up to Madden's gameplay". ESPN has been superior for about 3 years now... and after reading thru some of the reviews above it looks like I'm not alone in thinking that.
