nVidia and Sony Team Up For PS3
by Jack Mathews, Dec 07, 2004 10:33am PSTWell here's some news out of left field. It appears that Sony and nVidia have been jointly developing the PS3 GPU:

Sony is definitely bucking the proprietary hardware trend this generation with the Cell processor, made by IBM, so why is suprising that they're outsourcing the GPU as well?

Configurable graphics would also be nice.
Maybe a chat/email system (much like Star Wars Galaxies perfected).
Fileswapping.
A camera, auto shut-off timer (for those guilty gamers), Blueray DVD, and a usb flashdrive save/swap system. Fuck yeah.

Maybe by adopting some NVIDIA graphics platform, it might make some ports to PC easier, as well (GTA 4?).
One thing that is interesting to me is that the cost of the console doesn't seem to be a huge issue anymore. I thought the Xbox would have death at $300 when it launched....and I thought the GC would clean house with its $99 plus a good game bundle (I still don't understand why it hasn't, actually).

So this GPU could be on the PS3 and then slightly modified (more powerful) for the PC market. I dont see any other reason for Nvidia to cancel their next GPU.

The motives for NVIDIA to cancel the NV50 chip are currently unclear.

By the looks of this developers will have "Tool" around the start of 2005, fits nicely with the Cell workstations?
