This story on EETimes has word of AMD demonstrating a 900mhz version of their Athlon using the copper interconnects that the Dresden fab in Germany produces. Seems AMD has no problems upping up the mhz ante over Intel. The article also notes that the 800-MHz Athlon will be out next quarter, with the 1GHz coming out mid-2000. Thanks Chris Tom.

  • Future iterations of the Athlon will surely be performance leaders, but the current configuration of an Athlon system is not for me. Firstly, the current batch of motherboards are (reasonably) stable, but few manufacturers offcially endorse these products - hence, firmware revisions and technical support might be spotty. Secondly, the L2 cache is still off-die and runs only at half CPU clock speed. As a result, A PIII (CuMine) 800MHz will be worth the $$ and the (anticipated) 2 month wait - and it should run fine with my SDR geForce and Asus P3b-F......
