Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Dec 01, 2004 5:15pm PSTI threw lots of toilets today :D
- WiFi compromize in Philly - More fighting robots - Fat Americans breaking stuff - Blog is hot still - Luxur hybrids hitting - Electric eye for the blindLastly, thanks for the tips on NBA2K5 but apparently I'm just too awesome for the game. I dont get it. It's just sucks when you figure out the AI quirks and you have to fight with yourself to not exploit them. oh well.

MAC Apps that make using one a little easier
Quicksilver
http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/
Replaces your dock, by allowing you to access any files on the system quickly by doing a Ctrl-Space keystroke. I don't know how i lived without it for as long as i did.
Konfabulater
http://www.konfabulator.com/
The ultimate widget app for the Mac (and now for PC also). This program can run applets that give you a desktop calander, an IP monitor, weather info an so much more. Lots of fun to play with
Adium X
http://www.adiumx.com/
The only IM client for the Mac that is setup like Trillian, allowing you multiple accounts from various chat groups on the same program. Has a real robust feature set.
VLC Player
http://www.videolan.org/
PC users have been using it for a while, but new Mac users may not realise that it's available for the Apple also. Best avi and mpg player available for the Mac.
Azureus Bit Torrent Client
http://azureus.sourceforge.net/
The only BT client i've found for Mac. It works well, although im partial to ABC from my PC. But if you absoultly have to BT on your Mac, now you can.
Shiira Web Browser
http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/index-e.html
I was using Firefox on my Mac until i found this little gem. Using Web Kit and written in Cocoa, this is hands down the fastest loading web browser i've seen. Safari is like IE crap, Firefox is nice, but Shiira is the best i've seen.
That's all i've got for now, if anyone else has a useful app for Mac feel free to post it here.

So the sink and shower in the master bath are draining slow. Where slow means 'shower ends up with ankle deep water when you use it'. No good. So I stop by Home Depot on the way home from work, to get the normal chemicals. And then I see it. A device that clears drains with CO2 cartridges. I must own this. So I purchase it.
Really simple device, one end has a bike pump looking handle, that you load the CO2 into, you push down and puncture it with a piece of metal inside. There's an expansion area below it, and then a reversible plunger type thing so you can get a good seal on the drain.
So I use it on the shower. Get a good spray of water (you have to have the drain full of water to use it, they say) because I didn't have a 100% seal. Nice noise too! And after...the shower drains _fast_. Niiice. The sink was stopped up enough that it pretty much didn't drain, so I recharged and went to that next. I forgot about the little overflow drain hole opposite the faucet. When I punctured the CO2, I got this nice backsplash of disgusting black water that shot out of that hole all over the wall (and me!) Awesome. Sink drains fucking great now!
Best application of technology ever! Fuck chemicals! A+++ would use again, etc. I believe it is branded as 'drain kleen' .

A friend of mine is looking to buy a laptop for his grandmother, so she can do relatively basic stuff: use MS Office apps, check her email, etc. (look at Fusker pr0n) She'd like to spend somewhere in the $600 - $800 range....... can anybody recommend either decent specs for a W2k/XP laptop, or specific laptop model(s) at around that price point?
When Christmas comes around I intend on using it to expand my little library. I want help thinking of books to request. I mostly read science fiction books, but I would greatly appricate any suggestions outside the norm; either different genres or non-traditional works such as those by Gene Wolfe or Stanislaw Lem. In general, I like any book so long as it is well written, interesting, and thought provoking, or at least two of the three.
Or just reply with your favorite book or whatever.
Also, wasn't there an imbd type website for books being made? Anybody know the address or if it's and good?

I'm just curious. What has been your worst term and what were you taking. Mine was winter term of my junior year:
Biochemistry 451: General Biochemistry
Chem Engr 405: Mass Transfer
Engr 332: Energy and Heat Transfer
Chem Engr 461: Process Control
Chem Engr 312: Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics 2
That was the year that i stopped worrying about my grades and realized that i stressed too much about school. It's been a lot easier since then.
I'm sure you guys have had a lot worse terms. Which ones do you remember being bad?

What's with this "cascading" stuff?
I thought if I defined stuff for the <body> tag then everything that happened within the <body> section would inherit those properties unless I overrided them... But apparently that is mistaken.
So what exactly do I do to get it to do that? Or am I off my rocker?
Project due at 2:30 any help appreciated I just want to make my style sheet neater k thx plz

i spent 45 minutes, working on going about a mile this morning because some dumbshit lost control of his jeep and spun it into a rail on the university bridge (drawbridge with metal grate surface) this morning.
driving behind a gas tanker, i notice many labels on the back like "warning: flammable" and all the different levels of flammability. it's really reassuring, let me tell you, when i notice ashes from a flicked cigarette butt fly out of the driver's side window of the truck :(

From the IMDB
Although Oliver Stone's 19-year-old son Sean has shot the behind-the-scenes documentary for Alexander and while the video package is likely to include an examination of the actual life of the Greek conqueror and other informative material, Stone himself has indicated that he is not at all enthusiastic about the coming of age of DVDs. Video Store magazine quotes him as saying during a recent press event, "It's the end of movie-movies the way we know them. ... If you walk into a room with 5,000 DVDs, how are you going to respect movies? How do you know the good ones?," Stone asked. "It's going to the LCD -- the lowest common denominator. It's making movies into supermarket-shelf items, which is probably the best you can get at Wal-Mart. ... It's hopeless."
Um, ever since I was a kid I saw VHS tapes on sale at the supermarket. How has that changed with DVD? And what the hell is with that statement about walking into a room with 5000 dvds and not respecting movies?
