McGee To Adapt Oz
by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 28, 2004 9:59am PSTAccording to this Hollywood Reporter story (thanks HLF), American McGee's "Oz" is back on track in several ways. Infogrames dropped the Wizard of Oz based videogame a while ago, but it's being revived now that McGee will be writing an Oz movie script for super producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
McGee said the hero of the story, a teenage boy named Arthur, is whisked away from Earth to an Oz in turmoil. "Like Neo in 'The Matrix' films, the boy makes a hero's journey and comes to grips with his powers," he said. "What Jerry Bruckheimer was able to do with 'Pirates of the Caribbean' was simply brilliant, and since 'Oz' is similar in tone to that film franchise, I'd like to follow that model."

But I remember everyone here going on about how Pirates of the Caribbean was such a damn good movie, and it was based off of a fuckin Disneyland ride for fucks sake.
Just because McGee pens a script for Bruckheimer, doesnt mean a fucking thing (you people need to know how this works). It means Bruckheimer can sell it off or shop it around to other studios to have it made, find a director who's willing to be attatched to the project, and then maybe *maybe* it's made.
I don't think Bruckheimer movies are the best in the world either...but my god, it's like I walked into the neighborhood sewing circle.

the thing I don't like about mcgee is he doesn't want to earn his stripes, he'd just take an extremely famous property like oz (with one of the most memorable hollywood treatments among films already) and stick knives in the character's hands. I admit that was cool to me when I was 15, but now he just reeks of a man looking for cash ins. at least he's working with the right guy for that.
