Valve Cans 20,000 Steam Accounts
by Steve Gibson, Nov 23, 2004 9:26am PSTWell it looks like Valve has started to 'drop the hammer' or whatever you want to call it on people being naughty instead of nice when trying to get Half-Life 2 without paying for it. Here's the official word from Valve:
Yesterday, Valve disabled approximately 20,000 Steam accounts which had been used to try to access Half-Life 2 without purchasing it. The method used was extremely easy for Valve to trace and confirm, and so there is no question that the accounts disabled were used to try and illegally obtain Half-Life 2. Accounts also may be closed due to fraudulent activity in an attempt to obtain additional products for your Steam Account. This includes Credit Card fraud, theft of accounts you do not own and using cracked versions of Valve games. If you violate the Steam Subscriber agreement your account can be permanently disabled and you will lose any products registered to those accounts. Also, a few myths floating around out there that need to be cleared up. First, Valve did not put out any kind of fake key or fake warez or hack instructions to trap people. The hack came from the "community" as do they all. Second, the number of people who actually had bought HL2 and used the CD key cheat was VERY small. VERY small. Most people just tried to rip off the game and not bother buying it.

since complaints and opinions on steam are removed from the official boards, something like this is badly needed.
spread the word.

I think publishers and developers should just take it as standard that there game will get warez'd and concentrate on not pissing there real customers.

my experience getting HL2 over Steam was so positive, i'd buy all my PC games this way if i could. but i'm afraid that other companies' equivalent services may not be so user-friendly. it'd be cool if they were all just using the same one.

But the anouncement accomplishes at least two things.
1.It Kills the casual interest in warezing possibly resulting in more sales
2.Companies like EA, Rock Star Games, UBI Soft, ID, and MS may want to consider Steam or a similar distribution/monitor method. Especially as these companies saw their titles released on the Web days or weeks before they were available to the paying public.
20k is most likely just the start. I expect Valve to announce every phase.

Unless you're telling me there is someone out there who was dumb enough to unlock a warezed copy using a steam account associated with his real steam purchases?

First off, I do not have a Steam account yet. HL2 is installed on my PC, but under my roomates Steam Account. So we have been both playing off that copy. I have my own copy of HL2, but have not installed it yet. Along with not having a Steam account as of yet. What are the chances my CD key might be invalid for the fact I may not be installing my copy for some time. And really have no need for the Steam account yet.
I should still be ok right?

Let's see who's been naughty, and who's been naughty!
Mobsters keeping up a shopkeeper for protection money... Very naughty.
Shopkeepers not paying their protection money... Exactly as naughty!
