by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 23, 2004 6:30am PSTWorld of Warcraft day! Can't say I'm all that excited, MMORPGs just don't do it for me yet. I'm sure some day something comes along that'll get me hooked though. It doesn't happen all that often but it looks like EA misfired with GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, as the console shooter is getting very average reviews. Who wants to bet it still sells a ton of copies though. I had the game pre-ordered a few months ago but cancelled it recently as I figured I didn't really have time to play it anyway. Certainly don't regret that now. Also on FileShack

I have a little problem. I type in a Volume Label for a dvd i'm copying in the section in dvd shrink but when you put it in a dvd player it still just lists it as "NEW" so the volume label really isnt getting written to the dvd. Anyone else experience this?

I have three roommates with whom i share a DSL connection. (you know two of them: The_Janitor and cosmicfool). Everything has been going great, but all of a sudden this really strange problem occurs whereby after I've been online for awhile (awhile meaning maybe 5-20 minutes) everyone's web browsing will quit working at all. IM's such as MSN, AIM, etc still work fine, but web browsing no longer works.
Occasionally, it'll start cycling the modem's ADSL light meaning it is trying to re-establish a connection on the ADSL level; it stabilizes if i unplug from the switch that connects all the computers.
as soon as i am unplugged from the switch, the connection resumes for everyone else. That much is certain. My friend reported that while I was connected he could no longer ping the DNS servers.
When this problem originally started, I was operating under WinXP SP1a. I tried the following to fix the problem, to no avail:
- switch to a wireless network card (same exact problem occured with this new NIC)
- go into registry and remove all TCP/IP settings then reinstall TCP/IP over my NIC in order to re-initialize TCP/IP settings
- replace my winsock DLL with 'blessed' versions
and finally,
- install SP2
Now that SP2 is installed, the behaviour is slightly different -- no one else gets kicked off once my connection gets screwed. In firefox, when i try to load a page after the connection is damaged, instead of loading forever and popping up a dialog to the effect that it cannot find the server in question, it will just immediately 'finish' refreshing without actually refreshing any data.. as if i had never even clicked a hyperlink.
I did notice the following error message from my FTP client (smartFTP) when i tried to connect after the problem asserts itself: "An operation on a socket could not be performed because the system lacked sufficient buffer space or because a queue was full". I've searched google but there is nothing of import except a reoccurring problem if you have more than 50 network interfaces installed on your PC (I have 3 now).
I am running the latest version of AVG's antivirus software and there is nothing suspicious in my hijackthis logs, so does anyone have any idea what to do next??
uhm

is it just me that they're trying to piss off, or do the dudes that follow you ignore what you say? for them to stay still, like you tell them to, you have to lose them, behind a door or something. i dont want them to run out after me when i'm dodging striders in the street, i want them to live!

somewhere after nova prospekt, possibly in entanglements, you have to use the turrets to defend your position several times, usually until alyx can catch up with you.
the first time this happens, it took me only one reload to figure out the prime postion for the turrents. no problem. same goes for the third time you use the turrents, when you're waiting for the teleporter to come down so you and alyx can bug out.
however, the second time, when you have three turrents to defend |=| shaped area where the combine can enter from 4 directions, that's the one that gives me trouble. i tried this part at least 10 times and never could find a good way to set up the turrents. i would eventually get overwhelmed with combine and all my turrents would get knocked over and i'd die.
then, the other day, i was chatting with haiku, and he told me to try turning the turrents around right where they are in their lockers, moving the third turrent to the end locker, then hopping in the third locker myself and just waiting. of course, this worked like a charm, since the turrents couldn't be knocked over, and the combine would always go after them first, instead of me.
my problem is that this seems very cheap, and can't be the way valve intended this part to be beaten.
so my question is, how did you do that part?
use spoiler tags plz.

For fun and for my own reference, list what you think have been the best gaming values this year.
I'll list a couple, but also I am curious what other say (especially if I missed out on something cool)
UNREAL TOURNAMENT 2004 (PC):
The 2003 game in special packaging, with all new maps and modes (over 120 in total), on DVD, with a free Logitech headset, and a $10 coupon discount for 2003 owners.
HALO 2 LIMITED EDITION (XBOX):
Only $5 more than the regular edition in a special tin box, plus an extra DVD of content and a special insert with stuff about the Halo mythos.
HALF-LIFE 2 GOLD ON STEAM (PC):
Basically Valve's ENTIRE catalogue plus a collector's box, hat, and other goodies and a good $20 less than the retail equivalent.
SID MEIER'S PIRATES! (PC):
A 2004 remake of the 1980's classic on DVD in limited edition packaging, with a foldout map, artwor, and the original Pirates! game and for the exact same price as the "regular" version (while supplied last I guess).

We're still working through some testing on this release. It might be something we'll want to hold for another day and release tomorrow.

Why the hell isn't this working? Say I have an array I've generated like this:
FState AActor::State] =
{
state1,
state2,
state3
};}}/
I then want to get the size of that array using the sizeof operator: sizeof(actor->States). The compiler comes back with this error: error C2070: 'FState []': illegal sizeof operand
Why is it doing that and how can I get around it? I need to find the number of elements in that array =/

sell me the NintendoDS
Is it that much better than the SP? Are the dual screens as innovative as they should be? and what about the future of FPS gaming on it?

"We've been rigorously playing and testing Half-Life 2, Counterstrike Source and Half-Life Source for a long time now - and we've found nothing to suggest that the FOV change is a significant factor in causing motion sickness. We have, however, put a great deal of work and attention into reducing the motion sickness that can be experienced in the vehicles in Half-Life 2. During our early playtests, many of us were experiencing motion sickness from driving the buggy and the airboat - especially the airboat. We've done a lot of work on tuning the experience to reduce any ill effects - especially looking at how we manage the players head/view in relationship to the movement of the vehicles. Interestingly, for all of the vehicle sequences we revert back to FOV 90 so that you have more peripheral vision which is helpful when moving at these faster speeds. Even so, some people still do experience some motion sickness effects from long stretches in the vehicles - personally, I find that I am most affected by the intense jarring that occurs when you slam into something in the airboat at high speed - like when you miss a jump or something."
I hope somebody tries to mod a less barf prone movement scheme, there's some massive threads all over about people experiencing this problem

I get the following two errors when I choose "Offline mode."
Could not connect to Steam network.
This could be due to a problem with your Internet connection, or with the Steam network.
and
This operation cannot be completed when Steam is in offline mode.
I logged in online with this account for the first time in a few days last night, I believe it updated the Steam client, and now I can't connect in offline mode. >:(
