Go Vote!
by Steve Gibson, Nov 02, 2004 9:00am PSTOk for the sake of sanity of our moderators and everyone else, here's your official election thread to discuss things in. Keep in mind, random tirades about how much the system sucks, America sucks, or how dumb people are for supporting a particular candidate are not welcome in this thread. This is a thread for sharing information most importantly. So, share information... dont attack people. Or you'll be attacked with a banhammer. Deal? Oh, and no stupid 'vote my candidate' posts. We're all going to get attacked enough when we go vote.

Don't go. You know all those scary things that Bush'll cause like making Abortion illegal, killing liberties, etc? THEY HAVEN'T HAPPENED YET. And it's your responsibility as a concerned citized to make sure that it doesn't happen. Remember, 1/3 of the senate seats are up for re-election in two years, and all of the house. And political pressure can be exerted in between elections. Just because Bush got elected doesn't mean that all hell will break lose.
Stay, and fight for what you believe in. Because there's some of us that like it here, and need your help to keep things good. Our society operates on two sides fighting for control, and achieving a balance, everwhere from our courts to our government at large. So hold up your end of the bargain.
Sincerely,
A concerned and annoyed liberal democrat

So some kids at my college burned a flag. Found out by the college forums, alot of people were like "call the police!", and surprisingly(as an at college, SCAD specifically), I think only one guy said he didnt view it as a big deal.
Me, personally not sure what to think. Maybe its because I lived overseas until college, but on one hand I see it as just a piece of cloth. On the other hand, its burning everything that the USA stands for, but then I think at the end of the day I see it as just a piece of cloth.
Of course I would think differently if the flag in question had some real history(ie given to at a funeral, or from a musem or something) but the generic'ness of the situation just doesnt fill me with patriotic rage that some people seem to get from it.
Was just wondering your thoughts.

Hence all these gloating posts.
It's sad this current sports team is driving America into the ground. It's not a damn game people; situations change, no one will disown you for "switching teams" it's just part of the political process - it's okay to jump teams for a year (in stark contrast to sports teams) ya know?

Can anyone here give me a good solid reason why the exit polls' data was so completely off?

Its those Israelis. Israel. Our support for Israel vs their hatred for Israel. Its that cut and dried. So when we all get down to it, its support for one nation vs another man's hatred for that same nation.

"Among the numerous advantages promised by a well constructed Union, none deserves to be more accurately developed than its tendency to break and control the violence of faction....... By a faction I understand a number of citizens, whether amounting to a majority or minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community...... It could never be more truly said than of the first remedy, that it is worse than the disease. Liberty is to faction, what air is to fire, an ailment without which it instantly expires. But it could not be a less folly to abolish liberty, which is essential to political life, because it nourishes faction, than it would be to wish the annihilation of air, which is essential to animal life, because it imparts to fire its destructive agency."

Please. Our country isn't going down the shitter. While I may disagree with MANY of the Bush Administration's decisions, I can still say this is a great place to live.
Bush won, plain and simple. There was nothing shady this election; the people wanted Bush, period. Leftists, deal with it. Right-wingers, try not to gloat too much.
There's still a lot that can be improved in the country. And let's not forget the states. Many states are run by Democrats and Independents and need your help in passing bills and laws. That's the beauty of the state/federal system: even if the federal government is run one way, states have a lot of say in how things are run statewide.
Let's remember that we're all people first, Americans second, and [insert party affiliation here] DEAD LAST. I'm going to give Bush a chance. Maybe he will surprise me. And if not, that's why we have term limits.
Cheer up.

A lot of you hardcore republicans here totally look like idiots when you generalise liberals. and the same goes for the liberals talking down to conservatives. Fuck I'm mostly republican, but no way in hell would I ever have wanted Bush to run again because he was a horrible leader. I don't give 2 shits if he was republican.
I think we need to get rid of most of the Party shit. it's seriously a joke and ends up tearing people, and the country apart more.

Can't really fault republicans for saying it, but, if you compare this winning percentage (3%) to candidates going for re-election during wartime past, it's a bit different.
Civil War:
Lincoln - 55.02%
McClellan - 44.96%
WWII:
Roosevelt - 54.6
Dewey - 46.0
Vietnam War:
Johnson - 61
Goldwater - 38.4
So compare Bush's 3% winning margin to Lincolns 10.06%, Roosevelt's 8.6%, and Johnson's 22.6% (I attribute Roosevelt's lesser showing to a less focus on the war in 1944, as domestic issues began to take dominance over global ones, nonetheless, it's still 3x Bush's).
So, while this election may have the highest number of votes seperating the two candidates, Bush has the worst percentage difference of any presidential candidate up for re-election during wartime.

The reason I didn't vote for Bush this time (although I did before) is because I've learned what bush is really about over the last 4 years. Bush is not "stupid" in the way that the media often likes to portray him, but he is a person that seems to be entirely carried by conviction. That is what a lot of people like about him. In fact, I'd say he reminds me a bit of Lyndon Johnson. And like Lyndon Johnson, I think that quality could very easily lead him down a path that is the wrong one, but which he will refuse to back out of. And right now, there are a lot of opportunities for that in the world. Bush is bound to see this victory as a ringing endorsement of what he has done to date, and will no longer be thinking about reelection but about his legacy. Lyndon Johnson wanted a legacy of "A Great Society", but failed at that due to his bull headedness in dealing with the Vietnam War. The next time we have a terrorist attack, given Bush's current mindset, how many more countries are we going to invade? Or what about the delicate situation with South Korea? Or some other situation that would require tact and insight to negotiate, which are two things that Bush seems incapable of using?

Personally, I think their problem will not be the Democrats. It will be moderate Republicans. Many Republicans don't buy the whole moral agenda, but they believe in bits and pieces of the overall party platform. My mother, God bless her, talks like a Democrat, but votes Republican every time. She's for social services, headstart, pro choice, etc., but always winds up voting Republican. The Republicans risk alienating their centrists just like the Democrats did during Carter administration. The liberals ran wild, which resulted in the conservative and moderate Democrats abandoning Carter for Reagan, becoming the Reagan Democrats (and subsequently becoming Republicans). Because of the Carter administration, liberalism has been set back for 30 years.
I guarantee you the Republicans will push their agenda too far and will pay the price.
