I remember reading somewhere that if you use that money, the bank can't take it away. I dunno if it was legit or not.

I think that constitutes theft if you do actually

there's a big story online somewhere about a guy who cashed a "fake" check, but the check cleared.

Good read. He ended up giving the money back & he got a dollar or something from the banks error.

yeah that was a great story. Best part was when instead of spending the money he took it out in a cashier's check and kept it in a safe deposit box in the same freaking bank

No, they can ask for it back and you have to give it back. I believe there is a time limit, but it is most certainly theft if they catch it and you refuse to pay it back.

I think the time limit is something like 30 or 90 days. I'm no lawyer, though.

If I recall, there's been lawsuits filed over such things before.

I think the bank expects that you know enough about your account to know when there's money there that isn't yours.

And they will *ALWAYS* find the mistake eventually. Better to keep it in there, or let them know of the error.

I think banks have something like 60 days to correct errors. Don't spend it, wait for the full time first.

I told you man, just withdraw it and keep it safe somewhere for a year (or find out what the waiting period is), but I'd say afer a year you're pretty safe. And then spend away.
