Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Oct 10, 2004 5:00pm PDTGot to check out the Texas State Fair today and I was really pretty surprised. The last couple of fairs I've been to over the years have been pretty um... ghetto. This one was really pretty darn big and impressive. There was even a car show attached to the thing. Worth checking out if you're in the Dallas area. Look!

Season 1 had promise, despite plot-holes.
Season 2 showed me that not everything fullfills it's potential.
Season 3 showed me how false the expression "it can't get any worse" truly is. It did get better in the last 2 or three episodes of the season, though,
Season 4 has promise... I really liked the first episode. Maybe this is the turningpoint where Enterprise finally becomes what I hoped for since I saw the trailer for the pilot.

I wake up this morning to find:
1. Superman is dead.
2. Gas prices averaging $1.99 across the US, with 52% of a CNN online poll saying they are going to go higher.
3. I dropped my doughnut.
Have I missed any other bad news? :(

Is there a standard measurement for headlight height? I drove my BMW for the first time at speed at night this weekend, and my xenon headlights were WAAAAY too low on the highway. I don't know if the previous owner adjusted them really low because of how bright they are, but I really felt like it was dangerous. Is there a recommended height that all cars should be adjusted too? Otherwise I'm just going to have to trial and error it.

I have been playing a few retro games lately and thought I would share the love with the Shack.
Dungeons of Daggorath
http://members.tripod.com/~Frodpod/index-2.html
This is the first pseudo 3D dungeon crawl that I can remember. I played this on a Tandy Coco game console, not the TRS-80 (although we did have one). I still remember seeing the monsters in the dungeon for the first time and being freaked out. . ."cause they are SO real". Ahhhh memories. Yeah line art freaks me out. It is simplistic, and a little lame, but hey that is why it's RETRO.
Zork
http://www.csd.uwo.ca/Infocom/
My very first text adventure and what I consider to be the pinnacle of ALL text adventures (having played a LOT of Infocom text adv. back in the "day"). As with most text adventures it is a good idea to map the world out on graph paper, as it will save you LOADS of time. Also, these are tons of fun to play in a group as two heads are better then one, since they are basically puzzle oriented.
