The 2nd problem, and this is a fairly serious problem IMO, is that supposedly you were in limbo or hell or whatever, but the levels just looked like real world locations, only inhabited by themeless zombies. The problem was especially pronounced after the cutscene where the goth dude with the white hair tells you "no, you cna't go to hell, you don't know what it's like!" And what's the next level? A pleasant Venice-like water front with a nice sunset. Oh no the HORROR! Followed by (iirc) an abandoned train station. The FEAR!
The expansion seems to be more of the same. "Battle out of Hell" Apparently one of hell's scenic locations includes a WWII set.
I think the Painkiller engine is great. On my aging system, I was able to play with all the effects turned on with AA and still get buttah framerates. I just wish someone with a more focused sense of art direction would license it and take it for a spin.

It's not always about engine power, but someitmes about what you do with it.

You play as Hitler, and you will battle the demon horde and escape from Hell with your army of Nazi-era tanks and other vehicles!

I hope there are at least a few loose physics objects in there.
