Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Sep 16, 2004 6:03pm PDTSo the little lady finally got herself an iPod the other day and I do have to say I'm impressed. That wacky technology stuff is pretty nifty, and iTunes is good stuff too. If I actually cared much about music I'm almost sure I'd want one!

I cannot hear the damn difference, and I don't think there honestly is that much between a 192 and CD. Not audible to the human ear at least. I get the feeling most of these audiophiles would fail an entirely blind test.
I do recall someone saying they tried something like this, playing 2 songs, a wav and an mp3 decoded to a wav, and the people claiming to be able to tell the difference often messed up. Blah.

I'm thinking about picking it up now that I have a PC that can handle the larger battles, but is it worth it now?

Personally, i've never played everquest so i have no opinion on it. In fact, i can honestly say that i've never even seen the game in action. That having been said i just went to the everquest 2 site and watched the "In Depth" movie they have up (http://everquest2.station.sony.com/#mediaLatest) and i must say that i was really, really impressed with their rendering engine. I also like the idea that every npc that you can interact with will actually have recorded voice. I began to wonder why so many people that post on the wofw forums bash this new everquest game. So i have a few questions for you folks that may have played everquest and tried the wofw stress test.
First of all, what is so different about wofw and everquest? It's hard for me to imagine that they could be extremely different considering the genre (wofw was my first mmorpg). Also, what is it about wofw that makes it the best mmorpg to date as MANY reviewers have said? For someone that has not played a mmorpg before it's hard to understand why it is so different than other mmorpgs. Finally, do you guys think that wow is going to look as dated as the original everquest did after a few years? While I was playing the stress test I was really impressed with the graphics. I simply love the artistic way they approached everything rather than simply trying to go photorealistic. Still, is it going to withstand the test of time?

I mean... great game, I enjoyed every minute of it except maybe for the mortars homing in on me everytime I strayed just a few meters off my path, but it was basically a rail shooter... take weapon a, go to point A, kill germans. go to point B, get weapon b and kill germans. after you reach point C, use weapon a to shoot some germans. then go to D and grab weapons c, kill some germans. move over to E and use weapon d to kill some germans. run to F and kill some germans with weapon e. wait near F and use weapon a to kill more germans. woohoo, we made it. the positive side is that unless you screw up and move more than two meters away from your designated point, you aren't very likely to die. I was killed by an actual enemy exactly once, when a kraut snuck into my foxhole and bashed my head in with his rifle while I was at the MG. I did, however, die at least 7 times because of direct-hit mortars.
as I said, great game but basically a rail shooter, less of an FPS.
how is the full game compared to this?

i just finished gothic 2. totally awesome RPG. the save game timer clock says 44 hours. is that good for an RPG?
from what i can tell, i could have finished fable probably 4 or 5 times in that time, but i wouldnt even be a quarter of the way thru baldurs gate 2.
what RPG to play next? i left my save in KOTOR on the ____jedi training planet ____ cause i was bored and ive only just started vagrant story which seems to be cool but im worried about the fact that so far it seems to be nothing but combat and basic block shifting puzzles. where are the RPG elements? do i 'level up' by that random poker machine stat upgrade thing and thats it?
baldurs gate 1 hasnt appealed as much as i thought, although NWN could be a goer even tho i really dont like pause time combat. i also have BG2, Arx Fatalis (i have a save half way thru and i loved that game other than the slowdown so with a new machine that really should be next), anachnorox (god that mouse interface thing is shit, and is it an RPG or a adventure game with basic RPG elements?), ultima IX (i thought the anachronox control system was bad, i cant even rebind keys in that piece of shit), fallout 2, FFVII, la pucelle, i havent finished disgaea or persona 2 ... holy crap ive got a lot of unfinished RPGs still around.

"PUREPAK1.WAD a 5-level DM pak, featuring all of my PURE DEATH levels in one great package. Each level revolves around the BFG lift in some way, which makes for some hilarious situations! I put a lot of effort into lighting (check out levels 2 and 5), architecture and texture placement, and also added new sounds to enhance the overall atmosphere. Depending on the map, the action ranges from fast and frantic to strategic hunts. All weapons are included and the maps are designed for any number of players. This pak is definitely a must-have for any serious deathmatcher! "

So I get to the point in Fable where I can take the final training test. I decide to save so I can mess around a bit. I then reload and guess what? I am back to the beginning of the guild. What the FUCK!

Toshe station still has me laughing.
That was all very interesting. At times I didn't know what I was shooting at. These 60 player matches take a LOT of getting used to. Seemed hard to organize even with TS. I'll have to grab a mic and add my 2 cents on Sunday.
Good games, but, well. Maybe I was feeling off, but it seemed like we've had better games before with 30-40 people. When you're shot down the second you respawn several times in a row, it can get a bit irritating, and of course the lag doesn't help things. Also, I think maybe putting some of the larger maps into play would be good - Battle of the Bulge comes to mind.
Anyway, see you guys Sunday.

There's nothing more satisfying than tranquilizing guards, carrying them into a dark corner and then shooting them in the head. bwahahhah Or take their weapons away and wait until they wake up and listen to them whining.
Then when an alarm goes off accidently you deal with all guys, and carry them all into a dark room.
The sequel NEEDS a physics engine so I can make piles and piles of those poor guards and then jump on them and use them as a slide.
