by Maarten Goldstein, Sep 16, 2004 7:40am PDTYesterday I accidently knocked over a glass of water over my PC, which resulted in me immediately pressing the power button and shouting SHUT DOWN SHUT DOWN at the thing. It did, and after cleaning up the mess everything was fine thankfully. I'm glad I didn't have a top mount case fan, or I'd be pretty screwed right now. I will keep the glass on the other side of my desk in the future. Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 demo on the 27th, sweet. Can't wait to see what they've done with it. Movie: Your friend just had the costliest funeral ever.
For example, I can't help but imagine seven's ( http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?person=seven ) voice sounding raspy or buzzard-y. Every time I read his posts, I hear a voice somewhere along the lines of Billy Bob's character in Slingblade with an Australian accent, reading them to me. :[

Judging from discussions in XBL lobbies and Evening Reading, we've got enough interest for a decent turnout. Demo only, since relatively few people have the retail.
I'd go ahead and pick a time for the battle and take the lead organizing it, but my time this weekend is very limited and I don't want to force everyone to adhere to my schedule.

Domination Mode essentially works just like BF1942s Conquest mode, only slightly different. Both sides have a set spawn that is untakeable and your side always spawn from this area I believe (this area is rather large so you aren't always coming out of the same spot), even if you capture other points. Around this spawn are vehicles that constantly respawn (on some maps - there are DOM maps with no vehicles) . Theres rarely a time when you come out and theres no vehicle to take which is cool, even on a busy server.
So when you capture these points (just buy going up to the enemy flag and standing near it), you spawn with more grenades/satchels when you die. Also when you get certain spawns, you can call in artillery strikes, which is cool.
There aren't classes in the game and you can't repair vehicles. When something is damage it stays damaged. You CAN capture enemy vehicles though but you can't just hop in and drive away. Once you get in, a progress meter pops up just like your capturing a flag, and while your capturing it, you can't move it. Its kind of neat actually.
Also the infantry in this game is heavily important. Around the map, usually around spawns, there are crates/boxes of Bazookas/Panzershreks to blow up tanks. Also Satchels, which you get automatically when you capture so many points, blow up tanks quite nicely.
At any rate, its fun. Once I figure out the server cvars, I will have a perm server up for it. Heres the movie.

from what i can tell, i could have finished fable probably 4 or 5 times in that time, but i wouldnt even be a quarter of the way thru baldurs gate 2.
what RPG to play next? i left my save in KOTOR on the ____jedi training planet ____ cause i was bored and ive only just started vagrant story which seems to be cool but im worried about the fact that so far it seems to be nothing but combat and basic block shifting puzzles. where are the RPG elements? do i 'level up' by that random poker machine stat upgrade thing and thats it?
baldurs gate 1 hasnt appealed as much as i thought, although NWN could be a goer even tho i really dont like pause time combat. i also have BG2, Arx Fatalis (i have a save half way thru and i loved that game other than the slowdown so with a new machine that really should be next), anachnorox (god that mouse interface thing is shit, and is it an RPG or a adventure game with basic RPG elements?), ultima IX (i thought the anachronox control system was bad, i cant even rebind keys in that piece of shit), fallout 2, FFVII, la pucelle, i havent finished disgaea or persona 2 ... holy crap ive got a lot of unfinished RPGs still around.

woah, hot damn, slow down brother! there are germans EVERYWHERE. SIMULTANEOUSLY! the atmosphere is... remarkable (even though I had to play at 800x600 with everything off and even then it hiccups quite a bit) and the action is previously unheard of (at least for me).
but damn is that game hard. especially with a choppy framerate. I played on lowest difficulty because I had heard that it was hard before, but my expectations were exceeded when I had lost a third of my health during the jeep driving scene already. but there were lots of medikits, so whatever. I did as I was ordered and ran to search for a foxhole. when I arrived at the first one it was occupied, so I jumped out again and ran like hell. in the middle of nothing I suddenly get totally smoked by a mortar impact, insta-death. the second time around I followed my teammate to the foxhole I should've gone to in the first place and started shooting germans from behind cover. which was hard, seeing how they'd be warping around a little (framerate). and more and more of them came and I was almost dead already. I said fuck this and started to sprint back to the headquarter shed to get some medication. another mortar round ruined my plan though. (are they homing in on soldiers not doing exactly what they're told to do?)
so here I am, after getting completely owned by the lowest difficulty, twice in a row. time to clean up and defrag my HDDs, clean my registry, close any and all programs apart from the explorer and try 640x480. I don't expect to finish the demo in the first couple of runs, but this was just depressing.
white uniforms on german soldiers in the snow isn't helping either. and not being able to tell if a kraut went prone or died because he's a 6x6 pixel mess isn't too cool, too.
but next year when I get my mother's boyfriend's old computer, I am so playing this game again.
I hadn't heard from him since then and today we meet up. He suggested something along the lines of "since we all were in the car and I probably shouldn't have been driving anyway, maybe you two could pay for a part of it."
What the fuck? We were telling him directions on how to get to a particular place and kept telling him about 5 blocks before his illegal turn to stay in the left lane. He was behind the wheel, not us. I told him there's no way I'm paying and I guaranteed him the other guy wasn't going to pay either.

Looks like it should be interesting. Sadly we're lacking any Rupert like antics of stealing the other team's shoes on the first show, but we'll see what happens.

Moral of the Story: play as an evil thief so you can sneak around and steal stuff because as a goody goody warrior there is NOTHING to do on the side. Kicking chickens is awesome and all, but when there is no skill (just hit x and kick them down a hill) whats the point? Side games were fun though.
I knew it was short but good lord this was WAY too short. I missed one or two side quests but not for lack of trying (when you can hit guards / the guy your protecting it makes it really dang hard).
So, umm, yay?

The Baldur's Gate series... older adventure games... took me weeks to finish. Now it seems that newer games can be done in 2-3 days, or one week at a couple hours per day. That kinda sucks.
What's the deal? Is it all the complicated AI and graphics design that is soaking up all the dev time, instead of content?
At least Blizzard games have always had a lot of content to them...IMO...

Just bought this new card, and it freezes up every once and a while when running 3d aps... i'm guessing overheating. The card makes alot of fan noise before it gets into windows, then it gets quieter, the fans are still going, but i don't think at full speed... omg wtf.. anybody know how to fix this?
