Star Trek MMORPG Announced
by Maarten Goldstein, Sep 07, 2004 6:33am PDTThe website of Perpetual Entertainment offers a press release announcing that this company will be developing a Star Trek MMORPG. The game isn't coming out any time soon though, with a public beta test expected late 2006 and the launch of the game not happening until early 2007.
The game will deliver action, adventure and combat mechanics unique to persistent world games. Its design includes a rich array of solo and multiplayer missions set in space, on planets and in starbases throughout the universe. At launch, it will take place during the 24th century timeline in the series with other aspects of the Star Trek universe to be interwoven and added through expansions. "Players will encounter characters, places, and situations from their favorite Star Trek movies and television series; will explore incredible new worlds; and will cooperate with or battle friendly and hostile races throughout the game," said Chris McKibbin, President of Perpetual Entertainment. There's a FAQ on the game at the official Star Trek website. Update: PC.IGN has a developer Q&A.

It could work like this. Each players actions go into their 'file' and every so often (for example, when there's a vacancy) they undergo an evaluation to determine if they're ready for promotion. All like candidates are reviewed and the best one is chosen. A poor player might never advance past ensign (or private, or whatever beginner rank is given to them based on what faction they're in).
Perhaps there could be elite servers where players are directly responsible for promoting their underlings. All players starting on one of these servers is assigned a starting location/ship randomly to curb nepotism.

Here's a tip: Don't tell the public about your game until it's just about ready to go. This long-term anticipation thing only creates empty hype and loss of interest.

The Star Trek universe where there is no money, no need for transporting goods, no need for crafting, very little combat. It's singularly unsuited for MMORPG style of play.
That's my first impression, maybe they can pull something off.
