Late Night Consoling
by Alec Matias, Aug 31, 2004 8:00pm PDTThe GBA SP price drop is no surprise. Nintendo appears to be very committed in creating a separation between the GBA and the DS; they want to affirm to us that they can co-exist with each other. Of course, that's pretty difficult when the DS hasn't shown any software that makes truly innovative use of the dual/touch screens. The general consensus that I gather amongst gamers is that the DS is nothing more than an upgraded portable with nifty new features. It's backwards compatible with the GBA's current line-up, so why carry around two handhelds? If this thing is truly shipping in three months, I hope we hear more about it soon.
| | GBA SP Price Drop Imminent Word has leaked out from retailers across the country that the GBA SP will see its price reduced to $79.99 at some point this week, with September 2nd being the most mentioned date as retailers have been receiving promotional materials with the new price. While the reduction will really help spur sales of the handheld for the Christmas season, the price cut is more likely attributed to the impending release of the Nintendo DS. Currently rumored to launch at $150, Nintendo wants to stress that these are two platforms meant to co-exist, not compete. A large price difference could help reinforce that notion. A similar cut is expected later this year in Europe. |
| | Nintendo DS to Support VoIP Analyst group TNI Securities revealed in their entertainment report that the Nintendo DS will use the headset port and wireless networking capabilities to take advantage of voice-over IP, essentially allowing DS owners to make free phone calls. TNI believes this will "help drive adoption among the increasingly connected younger gaming audience." |
| | Area 51 Hitting the Big Screens The film rights to Area 51, the upcoming Xbox and PS2 sci-fi shooter from Midway, have been optioned by Paramount Pictures. Although the game has some big names tied to it, such as David Duchovny and Marilyn Manson, they are not obligated to fulfill their roles for the theater. The only name tied to the flick is Christine Peters, who is the producer and previously worked on How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and The Out-of-Towners. |
| | Hori to Release Flight Stick for PS2 A little something for the importers out there. Hori will release a flight stick peripheral for the PS2 in anticipation of Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. The stick is specifically designed for Ace Combat 5 and will feature separate throttle and stick controls, vibration, and comes packed with many kinds of stickers for personal customization. It ships October 21 in Japan only. |

I really hope that Monster Hunter turns out well, it reminds me of PSO. In related new, it might actually give me a reason to use my PS2 network adapter.
Suikoden II is greatness, btw. Good choice for Console Game of the Evening. Speaking of good RPGS, Phantom Brave & Star Ocean 3 tomorrow!
