More On Grossman

by Maarten Goldstein, Dec 09, 1999 3:50am PST

The interview with Col. Grossman from a few days ago (and this video) sparked quite a few respones. Check what bignot found out about our favorite Pokemon activist:

I just got off the phone from the Killology Research Group it appears as thought the LT. is a PAID expert witness in both pending lawsuits against the gaming industry and his "research group" run out of his house is taxed as FOR-Profit not a NOT-FOR PROFIT agency! The good Lt.(yeahh right) also has his speaking schedule posted at $5000 an appearance!

  • I thought some of what the guy said was valid, like how it may be worth restricting access to games if it saves a life or two, but some things I don\'t agree on. I\'d like to see some other things he\'s written because part of me wonders if he said certain things when interviewed by a gaming website which were intended to manipulate the readers -- it is his job to know how our minds work, after all.

For an expert, though, his definition of catharsis is very wrong.

    He says:

\"This is a term that Freud coined, now widely accepted, for taking the energy from unacceptable urges and redirecting them into acceptable areas. Thus the unacceptable is converted to the \"sublime\" and someone with the desire to hit people can become a boxer or football player.\"

He said elsewhere that you cannot have catharsis without physical activity. This is bullshit, though. Watching a film where the characters go to hell and back can be cathartic. www.m-w.com has a better definition:

    1 : PURGATION
2 a : purification or purgation of the emotions (as pity and fear) primarily through art b : a purification or purgation that brings about spiritual renewal or release from tension
3 : elimination of a complex by bringing it to consciousness and affording it expression

    > opinions are worse than assholes:
    > only one asshole per person

    I present to you...
    THE FOUR ASSED HUMAN!
    \"hh\'nuurghh\"

  • Look, if you argue strictly from the logical standpoint, in the interview he was NOT talking about completely banning all games, but
restricting their access to children, which I agree upon. I consider that age to be anything up to about 12. Face it, some things are for
    adults only.

I do not agree, however, with his assumption that playing computer games does NOT provide catharsis. His logic is that the only way to provide catharsis is through the expenditure of PHYSICAL energy. Who says that these games don\'t expend MENTAL energy?? Given his military
background, I can see why he can relate to physical activity more than mental activity.
