First Post!
by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 23, 2004 7:19am PDTYawn.. So the latest Prodigy album is finally out in stores tomorrow (only took eight years). I really don't know what to expect, didn't really dig that Baby's Got a Temper single from two years or so ago. Apparently that song isn't even on the album though, so hopefully it's not indicative of the style they're going for. Also on FileShack

(and the hardcore SoCal shackers too!)
It's time for another shackmeet. Oh yes! What I need from you is your availability on the following dates:
Sept. 11, Sept. 18, Sept. 25
And also ideas of where in the heck we should go this time.
We're looking for a fun/interesting place to visit that happens to be in close proximity to any of the following: movie theater, bowling alley, mini golf and, of course, chinese food!
I used to have a big list of Nor-Cal shackers who had expressed interest in attending the shackmeets, but sadly that list died in the DB crash. Sooo, if you or someone you know is interested in attending, speak up now or forever hold your piece!

Internet Output Policy
Just a quick reminder . . . if your personal computer is
connected to the campus network, outbound Internet
traffic from residence system computers (including
Frederiksen Court, Schilletter Village, and University
Village) is limited to 200 megabytes a day. If your
computer exceeds 200 MB per day, it can be switched
to a lower Internet connection. For more information,
refer to the full policy at www.ait.iastate.edu/policy/
residence.html.
It's about time though... I wonder how much it cost them to implement that. They've been spending money like crazy. All new weight equipment at the rec center (w0000t), all new washer/dryer machines in my dorm (like 20 washers + 20 dryers).

A cool new mod has sprung up for all you hardware and graphics junkies. Its called the "DOOM III Parallax Mapping Mod v1.0."
Basically if you have been under a rock with hardware and graphics technology, it basically enables parallax mapping which is also virtual displacement mapping which enhances the walls on textures to make them look "3d" All the new engines will be supporting this, as in the future also. It's very cool!

During the women's high dive there was a canadian that totally flubbed her dive, which ousted her from medaling. The cameraman followed her out of the competition area to the "waiting/rest area" in order to further film her emotional disappointment/crying fits.
What sort of perverse people actually like to watch "the agony of defeat?"
the same thing happened with the australian marathon runner that hit the wall and couldn't go any further. They had several shots of her in tears on the side of the road. Christ people, allow the atheletes some dignity.

This is my first post from home broadband in FOUR MONTHS.
Holy shit. All remnants from AOL have been cleared from my computer, the wireless network is pimptastic, and we have three different fridges with the cold Tasty brew that is Saranac.
Good night and god bless America.

I was doing some very minor wiring (turning a light fixture into an outlet) and I screwed up. I removed the light fixture and it was just the bare wires sitting in the little metal box not touching anything, and I started unscrewing the metal box thinking that I wasn't messing with the wires yet so I didn't need to turn off the curcuit. I accidentally wiggled the box and it touched a wire and the curcuit breaker kicked it off. So I leave it off and remove the box properly and move the wires out of harms way for the time being, and then I turn the circuit back on. Here's the problem. The line runs from the circuit breaker to Light1 to Switch2 to Light2 to Outlet1 to the socket I was messing with. So I turn the circuit back on and Light1 works, I'm not sure if Switch2 works because it operates Light2 which I'm sure doesn't work, and neither does Outlet1. So what exactly has happened here and what can I do to fix it?
...or do you need more info?

Keep in mind that I play bass and I like their style (especially Gittleman).
Actually maybe I just ask for specific songs.

Valve uses lower poly environments, with incredible textures. They still use bump maps and other new shader technology, except subtly. When you think about it, HL2 wins in both ways: Better performance on older computers, and realism gained through careful level design.
I could go on about the problems with Doom3's gameplay (particularly the AI, which I think needed months more of tweaking), but this is shacknews and you've all heard it all many times. And this is a HL2 thread.
I just think that HL2 is far more realistic than D3.

I want to do a dual channel setup, so I'm basically looking at 1GB or 2GB. If I can use three sticks and it'll somehow use dual channel I'd like to know. But 2x512 DDR400, of a recognizable brand, can be had for like $160. 2x1GB gets up near $400.
Just looking for opinions. I'm kinda splurging with the GT, so I'm really leaning towards 1GB. I can't imagine games thrashing badly with a gig to play with. Playing through DOOM on my brothers 9800/2800+/1GB DDR400 system in high detail I got very little HD activity.

I'd like to make my webhosting / consulting work official.
My problem is that I have no idea what that involves.
Anybody want to give me a guide? Pointers? Tips? Direction?
