Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Aug 22, 2004 4:33pm PDTSo I finished speccing out our next database server after harassing Kyle at HardOCP as well as Scott over at Tech-Report. I'm hoping we can get that thing up and running by next weekend so we can really spread out the load around here. Slow websites suck, I'm tired of having one!
- Big brother goes corporate - Very important record breaking work - Ancient Olympic riches - Gaming going retro? Going retro is already retro in itself. OMG!Lastly, anti-violence rules kicking in at cybercafes

I want a holiday for help desk workers. Secretaries, bosses, grandparents and swahili-speaking latino/eskimos, they all have made up holidays right? Well I want one. Except, I don't want cupcakes, coke and cards. No.
I want the right for one day a year, to really tell the customers what I'm thinking. There can be a warning on the phone tree, specially marked stationary, whatever, but there will come a day that I tell people that, jesus, we've reset your password four times this summer, I know you're an incoming freshman but perhaps you should look at a community college champ. I know that you're a doctor but seriously howabout you use that "DD" brain your parents bought you and read the instructions on the login page. Yeah, and apparently you're a network administrator for an entire college but can't read a fucking mail header. Jesus, I'm going to call your boss and tell them I can do your job better.
I just want one day. And heck, all our tickets here are "public record" so I could share them with the internet for maximum funny. We'd all win. Help deskers would be happy, and dumb people would be illuminated and everyone else would laugh. It'd just be one day, we wouldn't break the dumb people *too* bad, just dent and bend them a bit.
Please?

Holy cow. Wow. Just. Omg. Wow. The article title is CPU Cheatsheet - Seven Years of Covert CPU Operations dated today, August 23rd, 2004.
Its a big CPU recent-history lesson. It mentions code names of things you had, things you have, and things you want like the dual core A64s. It talks about architecture and compares speeds past all the marketing stuff. Any self respecting hardware junky needs to know everything in this article by heart. Everyone else, it is an awesome read!

Me: Moving went well. Moving company broke my computer desk but they will be replacing it. Have to hook up my internet tonight (Cox cable) but the faster speeds will be very welcomed.
Turned on the cable when it was hooked up and what do I see? wunderbred, king_darius, huds0n, mr. sleepy, emocore, and Steve in Kevin's segment. It was kinda surreal and topped off my weekend. :)

I've had a guy ask me if I were gay, in a serious manner, as if he needed to know before playing me.
I've had a kid tell me the story of his grandfather in World War II and how he currently has health problems.
I've been yelled at in two different languages.
I've been a "fucking cocksucker" for mentioning that I didn't like the current racetrack.
Great fun anyway. I can see why you guys play so many games over Live.

Two questions though:
1. I've heard there's a director's cut, someone want to give me the jist of what it was? Because the original "happy" ending felt a bit tacked on to me - given the cruel nature of the majority of the film.
2. What was the reason (more specifically than just because) that at times his returns in time could change things so drastically and others were nothing - like the visit to his father and the knife in the kitchen. Those felt like rather self-fulfilling paradox situations that actually managed to pull me out of the immersion of the movie.
All in all though, A-, would watch again.

If you have a material which you would want analysed indepth (at a molecular level, examing every subject particle and element contained within it) - is this possible with any current technology?
If so, what is it?
Otherwise, what would something like this be if it exists theoretically?
Cheers.

Particularly the shotty! What a piece of crap! It feels like a peashooter. It's slow and it feels so ineffective you might as well just throw the shells at the monsters for all the good they do you. As much as I complain about the weakness of the guns, there is one thing that is much much worse, and that's how terrible they sound. You might as well round each corner and yell out "BANG!" It'd probably be more convincing. This is a real let down considering how much detail there is in some of the other parts of the game's sound. Give me a meaty shotgun dammit! I want something that's loud and appears to have a greater affect upon the enemies!
Terrible :(
