Crack Down on Crack
by Steve Gibson, Dec 08, 1999 4:30pm PSTWell, it looks like the party is over for everyone that was running a cracked Quake3 server, the master server is no longer reporting your server so you're screwed on that end. Here is the .plan update from Graeme on the issue:
Cracked servers are no longer listed through the master. We're tracking these servers. We know your IP address, so if you have one running, I strongly suggest you take it down immediately.

its usually a .ini file, maybe the check is imbedded in the pak file for q3a
the nice thing is, since it checks for a string on the cd (in your cdrom drive) you KNOW the file is on your hd somewhere. load it up in your fav res editor and do some searches =)
or just dl a crack and save yourself the time
Don\'t be complaining if you find you can\'t log onto a server in a few days because \"CD Key is already in use\"
i fucking hate having to use the damn cd to play the game, so guess what, i applied the first cd key check crack that i found.
i still have my cd key intact, i can still play online (cause the shit didnt change) yet i dont need the god fucking cd to play.
simple solution =)
btw - cd check cracks are really damn simple to make if you cant find one, find the .ini file that looks for the string/file on the cd, redirect where it looks for that certain string/file to another place (eg. your q3a directory instead of your cdrom drive) and put the string/file in the place you told the .ini file to look for it.
but its always nice when someones already made a crack for ya

1) You ONLY need the _CD physically_ in the drive when:
a) You want to play singleplayer against bots.
b) You want to host a server with bots (bot_enable is 1)
2) You ONLY need your _cd key_ when:
a) You want to connect to a server on the Net (i.e.: outside your LAN\'s subnet)
Still confused? Sorry... can\'t help ya.

Yes, I have a CL TNT2U and it cuts off stuff on the right hand side. The models also become damn huge on the player setup.
I\'m just bringing up the topic of Quake3 piracy. Running a cracked server is illegal, and you know what happens then... say you want to LAN a bit and you own 3 computers, do you have to buy one copy for every pc you have? I wouldn\'t.
