CliffyB Interview

85
A pretty good and candid interview with CliffyB to lead things off this morning. Cliffy talks about UT2004 of course which has been quite a success. Check out Cliffy's attempt at describing mod communities.. I dunno where he's going there.. hehe

Bleszinski: Well I think our stuff’s easier to use than most other people’s so the barrier to entry is slightly lower. And I think, you know, Quake fans generally tend to be like Grrr, Arrrg, you know? So the Quake fans tend to be kind of like having that kind of old school like, Oh I’m a badass, kind of Internet It’s like the Unreal fans think that they How do I explain it? I don’t know. Maybe Unreal fans are more like guys. You know, it’s like, Hey buddy how’s it going? (gruff, low voice). Whereas women are all so competitive with each other. I’m totally, like, digging my own hole with these comments. Be careful with how you edit this.

Not to thrash Carmack and all, but CliffyB just seems like a more interesting person (personality wise anyhow). I'm not sure if you've listened to the QuakeCon Carmack keynote, but his voice is just so painfull to listen to for an hour! :P

well Carmack is a programmer (and a rendering programmer at that) and CliffyB is a game/level designer. Really even though they both develop games the personalities of both are going to be very different in pretty much every case.

If you want a better comparison you should compare CliffyB to someone like John Romero or American McGee who are designers as well and are very similar to Cliff in a lot of respects.

But if you put it like that you cut out the ability for people having a bad day to take out some stress on those saying CliffyB would be a better drinking buddy than Carmack.

You're right on that level, but on a more basic level they're both figureheads for successful game development companies that have huge money making franchises. I think "normal" people just relate to CliffyB a little better (well, a lot really) than Carmack.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that Carmack is lame. I worship him as much as the next guy, but Cliffy just takes things up a notch ..

I think the fact that CliffyB is a shacker and Carmack is a /.'r explains a lot.

Interesting how it's the level designers mouthing off with their egos ;) They are hella rockstar!!

Carmack's interviews are always informative. I think substance is more important than presentation, and when I think about where cliffy has taken the Unreal universe, I just can't take anything he says seriously.
