CliffyB Interview

by Steve Gibson, Aug 19, 2004 9:28am PDT

A pretty good and candid interview with CliffyB to lead things off this morning. Cliffy talks about UT2004 of course which has been quite a success. Check out Cliffy's attempt at describing mod communities.. I dunno where he's going there.. hehe

Bleszinski: Well I think our stuff’s easier to use than most other people’s so the barrier to entry is slightly lower. And I think, you know, Quake fans generally tend to be like Grrr, Arrrg, you know? So the Quake fans tend to be kind of like having that kind of old school like, Oh I’m a badass, kind of Internet It’s like the Unreal fans think that they How do I explain it? I don’t know. Maybe Unreal fans are more like guys. You know, it’s like, Hey buddy how’s it going? (gruff, low voice). Whereas women are all so competitive with each other. I’m totally, like, digging my own hole with these comments. Be careful with how you edit this.

  • He's exactly right that there are too many options in UT2K4. It's like Yahoo games. People find their game or three and pretty much stick to those. You got your Spades people and your Go people and your Literati people, but those people don't cross paths. There's no community, just a bunch of people playing games.

So not only do you have players scattered to the winds, but the modders have followed suit. There are over 50 UT2K4 mods (and 30 more in the works), some with a player base in the hundreds, many with a player base consisting of only the developers themselves. Some of them are original, but most of them are CS clones or a combination of two or more gametypes. There are like 10 CS clones. 10! So now you have 10 choices as a player, but that also means that the available pool of players is divided into 10 groups.

What UT2K4 needs is some bank mergers. We'll use this feature from your mod and this feature from my mod, we'll tweak our maps to make them look like they belong together, and we'll merge our fan bases.
