GeForce 6600 Announced
by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 12, 2004 7:03am PDTNVidia today announced the GeForce 6600 series, which will include a regular version of that chipset along with a GT version. Both these cards are considerably more affordable than the 6800 cards, with the regular 6600 card setting you back $149 while the GT version will be $199. Though the press release mentions they'll have awesome performance in DOOM 3, that of course remains to be seen. There's a benchmark-less preview on Tech Report.

Both cards can get by with a single-slot cooler, which is especially impressive for the 500MHz 6600 GT.
Mainstream cards not requiring two slots is "impressive"? No, no it's not. Here's to hoping nVidia doesn't decide all its customers have an extra slot they feel like wasting because of their ridiculous cooling systems.
