Sunday Afternoon ShackReviews
by Alec Matias, Aug 08, 2004 10:00am PDTHere it is, Shackers! DOOM3! As if you guys haven't said enough in the comments, now is your chance to make your opinion official, as certified by The National Board of Shack Game Reviewers. But don't let DOOM3 take the thunder away from the other big releases of the week! Galleon finally arrives (seven years after its announcement) and R63: Black Arrow is out at a slightly-reduced price. As always, if there's a game you want in the database, see if it's already there and if not, request it!
- DOOM3 (PC)
- Galleon: Islands of Mystery (Xbox)
- Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow (Xbox)
- Lock-On: Modern Air Combat (PC)
- Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel (GBA)
- The Typing of the Dead (PC)
But I digress; I now have a new system and I spent a good amount of my evening last night taking part in the Great American Dream: playing DOOM3 at over 60fps.
Diablo 3 patch coming next week
Elder Scrolls Online plans to sort out bugs with long beta
Super Monday Night Combat launches Turbocross mode
The Secret World delayed until July 3
Daily Filter: Sleeping Dogs, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

I would use such a system to say how fucking tired I am of people saying things like:
"it has long been said that id makes engines, not games. doom3 doesn't change that. the game isn't bad, but it's not that special. the gameply consists of moving from room to room and shooting the same enemies with the same weapons, from the first door to the last."
Aside from the fact that what he wrote is a summary definition of what FPS gaming is and if he doesn't like it he needs to find a new genre of gaming to play, this is also Doom3 - the sequel to the games that really started the whole "moving from room to room and shooting enemies with weapons" thing (Wolf3D/Doom/Doom2).
Seriously, where the hell were your expectations at if you have the nerve to act disappointed at the gameplay when the gameplay is exactly what any reasonable person would expect DOOM3 to be about?
Doom3 is both a solid game and an engine demo, unlike Q3A which we all agree was just an engine demo with quality pure deathmatch used to demo it. To claim Doom3 is Just Another id Engine Demo screams anti-id fanboy.

Why aren't there lights attached to the guns? I mean, duh, how hard is it to program that? Don't they have tape in the future?
Design decision, gameplay dynamic, hello? They did it on purpose and for good reason. If you could wander around everywhere and see what you were doing the entire time with a gun at the ready, it would detract quite a bit from the game's intensity. When you're staring at an ominously dark hallway and don't like the idea that you have to walk down it with a flashlight out instead of a gun because something might attack you, id's design decision is in full effect. It makes you feel more vulnerable and forces you to make a decision about how to handle the various locales, and that amplifies the game's fear factor. If it bothers you that much, go download the DuctTape mod instead of expecting id to sacrifice a large chunk of the game's emotional impact.
It's too dark! Everything is dark, all the time, this sucks.
It's meant to be a dark game. If it's really that dark, you probably haven't configured your r_brightness and r_gamma settings properly. Remember that you can adjust only the brightness through DOOM 3's options menu -- you'll need to adjust the gamma by hand. The best way to do this is to load up a new game, bring down the console via Ctrl-Alt-Tilde and play with the variables until you can see that the area has a deep brownish-red color (dark, but at least visible) to it instead of the default black. I don't recommend going overboard with lighting things up, however, because once again overdoing it can take a lot away from the feel of the game.
Why is there a lame QuickSave option? It's like a safety blanket for people too scared to play the game "the right way."
If id hadn't included this option, a lot more people would have been unhappy. The key word here is "option" -- if you don't like the feature, don't use it. I find that I have a lot more fun when I only save the game before quitting.
The gameplay is too simplistic! __________ did things so much better.
DOOM 3 is innovative in exactly the right ways, and that's what makes it such a wonderful finale to the series. DOOM isn't about driving vehicles around Mars or traversing rolling landscapes, it's about being thrust into a scary-as-fuck situation with only a pistol and killing everything that gets in your way. Effectively, DOOM 3 accomplishes what everyone dreamed about when the original game came out: what would this be like in a near-photorealistic environment? It's frightening, intense, emotional... everything that you felt when you first played Knee Deep in the Dead, and if a game like DOOM 3 is going to become a worthy successor to the throne, it can't radically change that formula. What was changed only makes the game that much better. The interactive computers are amazing, but not so complex that they distract you from the task at hand; monsters are much smarter now, and while they may not be geniuses, they've managed to impress me on multiple occasions; and the PDA system was implemented perfectly and makes both telling and following the story quite enjoyable, along with injecting some humor into an otherwise very dark (no pun intended) game.
I'll stop before it sounds like I'm writing a review, but honestly, if you didn't like the DOOM series to begin with or expected something completely different from the third game, wait for the demo before you buy it.

doom3 is dark, but there are only a few times when you absolutely can't see anything, and that is usually by design to scare you and stuff. if your darkness problem isn't what i just mentioned then only thing you can do is fiddle with r_gamma so that it's dark but not black.
everyone has different monitor settings and when you are talking about a game this dark to begin with monitor settings definitely make a difference. on my old monitor doom3 would probably be unplayable without r_gamma.
cheers,
steve

Not to say there aren't some memorable features. Most notably the computer terminals. Showing video or manipulating programs right on the computer screen was great. The PDA system was solid for telling the story. Video Disks were a good idea, but wasn't utilized nearly enough. I was expecting some Halo style video footage of marines fighting.
I guess my main complaint with the game was that the combat was weak. I much prefer Max Payne 2 style combat, where bullet holes are left in walls, bodies fly around the room and background objects break and bounce around. Of course Doom 3 has similar features, it just isn't utilized in the out of the box game. Doom 3 lacks the cinematic flavor of Max Payne 2.
