For those of you who dont have it yet, bummer! Please DO NOT spoil plot points in this thread. The spoiler tag is your friend. Also, "I'm not looking forward to this game" and "I dont care" etc style posts will be nuked/banned. If you dont care then prove it by not even bothering with the thread!

on the last level, just before you meet the cyberdemon, there is an ID logo carved in stone, puch it and this opens a secret room with the PDA of ID Software in it, it has messeges from everyone at id software, cool stull, the Fred one i liked:

Unfortunately every soundcard seem to output every channel separately instead of one 5.1 signal.
Are there any cheap soundcards/MBs or dolby/dts encoders that will allow me to use my Home Cinema surround?

I'm really getting sick and tired of seeing people with slow performance and fast machines. You guys really need to do some maintenance. Here's some tips and tricks to get you up and running.

For reference, i'm running an Athlon XP 2500@3200, 1gb RAM, 9800pro@XT speeds... 1024x768, High Quality, everything on... 50-70fps
I. Video
1) Download the newest drivers for your videocard
2) download and install this: http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/
3) Go to your device manager and uninstall your video drivers
4) Boot into Windows Safe-Mode and run driver cleaner, pick your videocard, etc... reboot to normal mode
5) Install your new drivers... reboot
6) Install the newest directx... reboot
7) Done
II. Hard Drive
1) Run a defrag... reboot
III. Software
1) Download and install Spybot... run through it a couple times until everything is gone... if it's still finding stuff besides DSO Exploit (bug) than you have a serious spyware issue and need to ask for more help.
2) start>run>msconfig>ok (xp, 98se, me... 2k needs to do a google for msconfig.exe)
3) go to the startup tab and uncheck everything (you can go back and recheck what you need later... particularly firewall and antivirus)... 98se and ME need to leave systray.
IV. Other
1) Get the chipset drivers for your motherboard and install them... very important.
2) Tell the windows update software to download and install automatically at 4am.
3) DEFRAG... jesus, man... it's important to do it for the health of your HD!!!

How? In your shortcut to Doom 3, add com_allowConsole 1 (i.e. C:\D3\Doom3.exe com_allowConsole 1). When the game starts, hit escape to leave the full screen console and see main menu. To show FPS, type com_showFps 1 (type the first letter or more of any command and hit TAB to see a list of all commands with that prefix). To run a time demo type timedemo demo1 and don't touch anything till it's done. The first timedemo after you start the game always comes out a little slower than second try or third... so do it twice at least, or three, and you'll see try 2 and 3 will be ~10% faster than first. Anyway:

1: 20.6, 2: 22.7, 3: 22.7
Played with setts #2 last night, played fine. Today I decided to switch down to setts #1, and it runs even better. Shadows and Specular make a noticable difference, espcially with flashlight, and really don't look far worse provided my low end configuration (shots are in maximum JPEG quality, 114 to 164 kb) ... Shadow and Specular either ON or OFF:

The missing shadows are hardly noticable for the most part, since the maps still retain the basic shadowing of the geometry, and everything's so damn dark anyway.

I put in an extra 256MB of RAM so I could have 512 in preparation for installing Win XP and DOOM3, but I put it in the wrong way for god knows what reason and didn't think about it until it after the fact. Being the dumbass that I am and going through a total brain lapse, I turned the machine on without the RAM being seated correctly.
"ZAAAAAPpppp CRACKLE... SNAP... POP... CRACK... ZZZZAAppp..."
5 seconds later the computer shuts down and I smell burnt electronics. Sure enough I take out the extra RAM and it has burn marks on 2 sides of the gold connector pins.
Now the computer won't boot at all, it's just dead. I press power and the motherboard light and fans go on for like .5 secs, then nothing. I tried swapping a 200W PSU for the current 350W (I have an Athlon XP 1.4Ghz) but still the computer does nothing.
I guess my motherboard or PSU is fried, or 200W isn't enough juice to turn it on. The moral of this story - pay attention when you are fucking around with your machine - I didn't and now I don't have one.
...And so much for DOOM3 :(```

So if you haven't bought Doom 3, don't go to EB looking for it. Atleast not as your first stop.
Played it for 3 hours, here is my inital impression.
First the hardware:
A64 3200+
1 gig pc3200 memory
ATI x800 pro 256 megs
Soundblaster Audi 2
Settings:
High quality
1280x1024
The graphics... believe it or not, are kind of a let down. I don't see a lot that couldn't of been done in Far Cry. Some things, but not a whole lot. Sure the textures are better quality but then Doom 3 requires more texture memory that Far Cry. The shadowing might of been done better in Thief 3 but it might be the style of game has me appricate it more. Still, the graphics are very nice and show off my x800 very nicely. My buyers remorse with chosing ati over nvidia went away.
The sound.. This is one area where Doom 3 is great. I really don't think any game has the sound quality that Doom 3 does
Game play... Yeah this is rather average but the last 3 FPS I've played required a great deal of planning and/or sneaking around (Far Cry, Thief 2, Call of Duty), just turning your brain off, especially in a game of this artistic calibure, is very nice.
So in closing, at the 3 hour mark, I'm very happy with Doom 3.
Just for giggles.. I threw Doom 3 on this system:
Athlon 850 (its the original core, whatever that was)
384 megs of ram
nvidia 5900se
sound blaster live
Settings: details to the ground
Ah, it runs and honestly, when you are in an area when everything is loaded, its playable. However loading is very, very painful. Also the sounds are completely outs of sync. If you are rushing into a new area and get into a fight, you get a lot of studdering and pauses.

Like the employees watch the same video every day, forgetting how stuff works every day? I think that is kinda awkward, but it is still cool. Not realistic though. But the game itself isn't 100% realistic in it's storyline anyway :)

The new ati OpenGL drivers cause random frame drop, that really mess up gameplay (cs, natural selection, etc.). In the Omega drivers you can choose to use the old OpenGL drivers (that do not have this issue) or the new ones (that support all modern OpenGL games). I had compatibility selected (for natural selection), and it probably did not support new OpenGL methods.
The frame drop issue seems to be resolved in the new 4.8 Catalysts.
So basically don't use the new Omega drivers.

Running XP, NTFS on the hds.
Is it better to defrag BEFORE, or AFTER you install a big program.
What specifically causes fragmentation? Copying? Deleting?
How much of a factor is the % filled of the hd? Is there an optimal amount?
Is the default windows defragger good? Are there better options (for NTFS, in general? Why if so)

This is medium quality 800x600 on my p4 2.4ghz Geforce4 Ti4600 512mb RAM... game plays flawlessly at a (near) constant 30fps, no stutter or slowdown.
