Duffy On DOOM 3
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 26, 2004 11:02am PDTid Software programmer Robert Duffy made a big update to his .plan file, talking about the game's different image quality options, hardware and software used during development and a few other things.
In Ultra quality, we load each texture; diffuse, specular, normal map at full resolution with no compression. In a typical DOOM 3 level, this can hover around a whopping 500MB of texture data. This will run on current hardware but obviously we cannot fit 500MB of texture data onto a 256MB card and the amount of texture data referenced in a give scene per frame ( 60 times a second ) can easily be 50MB+. This can cause some choppiness as a lot of memory bandwidth is being consumed. It does however look fantastic :-) and it is certainly playable on high end systems but due to the hitching that can occur we chose to require a 512MB Video card before setting this automatically.

The rumor on the net was that Xbox2 would have 256 megs or RAM. That doesn't sound like enough to run Doom3 at ultra detail. This is why some people have been pushing for 512+ for Xbox2 instead of 256.

"Well there have been rumours flying around lately that DOOM 3 would not be able to run on computers that have Windows 98 or Windows 98SE as their operating systems. Since we here at planetDOOM dislike rumours in all shapes and sizes, we went straight to the horses mouth so to speak and asked Activision themselves. The reply we got was that it is confirmed and indeed true that DOOM 3 will only run on Windows machines that have windows 2000 or XP and not lower. So there you have it, looks like some peoples upgrading woes just aren't quite over yet."
Take that, Bob, you 98er! hahaha

The thing I'm curious about, is why he didn't mention anything about ATI's normal map compression technology (that's available on the X800 cards.) The technology can compress normal map textures to 1/4 the size with almost no loss in image quality. If Doom3 would use this feature... maybe X800 owners could run the game in Ultimate quality?

I wonder how successive it will be? It would be cool if you never saw a loading screen.

So much for scalability down the road. A 60hz physics rate I understand, but a fps cap is just retarded. I still hope a physics-only cap is what is actually happening, but the plan was specific enough that it seems doubtful.
Guess I'll just have to buy a monitor that does 120hz at 1024 someday.
