Fanboy debate of the day: id and Valve, which one is really over hyped?

Over at Blue's this debate I find amusing started in the HalfLife Bug thread. (I post there as Crunch)
Basically my point is that Valve only ever did one full-fledged game and that was six years ago, and since then they have managed to be in the spotlight almost non-stop even though they haven't produced internally a single full game themselves (a couple mods for HL don't count -Ricochet was cool though) which is the first goal of a game developper. Sure they've done the Steam thing but that's not game development.
And suddenly one year ago HL2 is announced and Valve is now hailed as the only savior of PC gaming and of the whole universe. And I find that amazing..
I did like HL, and if it's sequel turns out to be cool i'll gladly play it, but I really don't understand what's all the hype about Valve...

Since the comparison started with Doom, if I look at id's recent history I feel they've maintained a much lower profile than in the Q3 days. Nowadays they have a very high visibility of course, but I find it's more about the game than about the company and its individuals (except John Carmack of course, but that'd deserve a whole article..)
Am I missing something? Am I mis-informed? am I just too much of an id fan?

Like.. what's up with this Valve hype?..

This is very much a problem of the Pc gaming 'scene' to over hype companies and games very easily. Much like cinema actually.

So, I totally finished with the graphics and code for the little >> interact >> menu on my site.

I'm pretty sure it all works cross browser etc (it's all valdiated for accessibility/code), and I'm about to not touch it ever again. If anyone feels like doing a quick once over of it and testing that it works, it'd be greatly appreciated. Also any comments or constructive criticism would be radical, too.

Windows Server running IIS w/ ftp installed and working. I have files that the server can read on an smb share and I would like to directly link that over my local network. So if you hit my ftp you can just do ftp://rosewood/gay_porn and it pulls off my machine and I dont have to copy my gay porn to the server.

Linux n00b warning.
I wanted to try out Linux so I got Suse9.1 Pro because it was the 64bit edition for my Athlon64. This is my 3rd encounter with Linux and I am still thrown by then installation. All the different "packages" make my head spin. Even someone as Pc and Mac smart as myself dosnt know what half that stuff is but Im sure I dont need it. And as for the stuff I do need/want, there are like 3-5 different programs that all seem to do the same thing. I dont want 6 different CD-players, 8 image editors, 256 text editors....
Should I get a Linux for dummies book or are there any good Linux for n00bs websites?

Done, and done, per recommendations from the shackers, I picked up an Antec Sonata case.

Love the shiny black finish and the simple fact I have cut the noise of my computer by at least 85%. Totally dig the side mounted hard drive bay with the vibration grommets as well as the fact the fans are all rubber mounted.

Ugh, one thing that bugs me in all current game engines is that fact that, on characters mostly, things bend/move that shouldn't. You'll see a guy in a pause cycle and he's wearing a piece of armor up front and a leather vest showing in the back. Now, when he breathes the leather flexes, but so does the solid piece of armor. Now why can't you make some vertexes rigid, while others flex?

I can't believe how fast Final Fantasy 1 on the NES is with a strategy guide leading you around. I remember it taking me weeks as a kid what I did just did in the past 24 hours.

One question for the old school players. Do you need to get up to a high level to beat the game? The strategy guide keeps mentioning how he leveled up to lvl 50 so I assume that is the max. But my characters are lvl 23 and already kick anyone's ass in my way. Plus I already have all the best magic, two orbs, and just need to get some better armor/weapons. So does anyone remember around what level they beat it at? I am power leveling now but if I went to lvl 50 it would take me 6+ hours of this at least.

How noisy is the heatsink/fan combo? I've had the MB+CPU sitting on my desk for a week now, and I'm about to install it.

Does the hs/fan do a decent job of cooling it, or should I be looking into a 3rd party cooling solution?

Since I finally have a new video card, I was looking for something that would show off all the fancy shit of my 6800 GT. I remembered there was a demo posted on the shack a while ago that was pretty cool looking and after some googling, I finally found it.

I picked up ESPN Football yesterday (for $20, you can't pass it up). I don't understand how people can say that this game looks and plays better than Madden. The player models are not that good. The animation is stiff. The control isn't very tight. I will give its Franchise mode props though. That some really in-depth shit there. The presentation is also good, but a digital Boomer kinda scares me. Overall, I just have more fun playing Madden. Even with its crappy commentary, minimal feature having Franchise, and bulbous player models, it just "feels" better to me.

I have an extra 120GB western digital hard drive, rather than add to the heat and the noise, I want to mount this in a external case and turn it into a mirror backup of my system.

Any good recommendations of a firewire or usb 2.0 external case to house my EIDE hard drive?
